Reaction in Ohio to Gee's Comments
My first thought on reading Gee's comments was that the worst part for OSU was his comment about PSU and OSU having a strategy of keeping Pitt and UC weak. This is bad because publicly, they've always been very supportive. A Pitt fan (Dr. Isaly von Yinzer) mentioned that JoePa even wrote opeds on how hard he tried to get Pitt into the Big 10.
Now that they've publicly admitted what we've guessed all along, here's how UC responded:
UC's Ono: Ohio should have multiple flagships
Could this lead to Ohio starting to require in-state flagships to play each other? West Virginia and other states have had their legislatures force this issue in the past.
Obviously, this will have an impact beyond sports as well. OSU usually has their way in state politics. UC is big enough to be an effective counterweight, but only if the MAC schools are neutral. But usually, the MAC schools back OSU because most of their boards of trustees grew up as Buckeyes football fans. But on this, I think the MAC schools will back UC. I wonder if this will have a similar impact in PA?

This is similar to the same stuff NC State pulled because they wanted to be called a "flagship" in NC. Everyone knows that UNC is THE flagship for the state, but NCSU got tired of not being recognized as a flagship. In this case, NCSU is the largest school while UNC is the most well known and most prestigious.

Technically, SUNY is more like Cal State in that there is no designated flagship. However, the Cal system...it's Berkeley AND UCLA.

Hmm. As someone in Ohio I have never recognized UNC as any better than NC State. Maybe in state there is a perception there, I don't think the perception outside of the state is that UNC is better than anything save basketball.

You are in the extreme minority. UNC is far superior academically as noted by numerous publications. Athletically, UNC is in the top 10 for national championships in the nation with 40. I think NC State has about 8.

I also look at UNC and NCState interchangeably, except in basketball. I guess because I follow football and not much else. I don't know much about the 2 schools though.

The WVU/Marshall series was all on then Gov. Manchin's back.
But I totally understand your point. I would love to see Cincy play OSU every year.

The only Ohio MAC schools would would align on this issue with UC would be Ohio and possibly Toledo. The other two schools either are too far up OSU's butt and/or are happy with their lot in life.
As a whole it is simple economics that should make all taxpayers of the state of Ohio upset. These games spur the local economy. Imagine how busy the hotels, restaurants and bars be when the game took place? Second, if UC were in a power conference they would not have to subsidize from their general fund to pay for the athletic department. All the surrounding states (Kentucky, Indiana, MI, PA) have 2 or more teams in a power conference. That is quite remarkable when you consider each of those states produce a fraction of the FBS talent that Ohio does.

Exactly. UNC football has not been very good in any of my lifetime, while NC State has been only slightly better (all from memory). I vacation south of Wilmington every year, so I'm fairly familiar with the schools (and drive by and actually stay in Cary every year). I don't think that UNC is viewed better than NCSU nationally.

Are you guys serious? Unc is one of the elite universities in the world. The two schools aren't even near the same level. Maybe in football there's not a huge difference in level but that's about it. You must be saying this to get a rise out of people. I love Pitt but I would never compare it to UPenn as an academic institution or Penn State as a recent football power.

I always thought UNC and NC State were like a lot of Southern states and Indiana - an ag/engr school and a liberal arts school. And I think that UNC is a better liberal arts school than NC State is an ag/engineering school. But these days, engineering is so much more valuable than liberal arts that I think of them as about equal as far as quality of school.
It's odd because in other states that have that setup, the schools typically have close to equal sized fanbases. But UNC definitely seems to be more popular than NCSU.

I think that's true of Virginia Tech and UVA (or W&M for that matter).
Georgia/Georgia Tech kinda has that setup but GT wins all around regardless.

I don't have anything for or against either school, but UNC fares much better in academic rankings and reputation.
THE: UNC tied for 42nd worldwide, NCSU ranked in the 301-350 range.
ARWU: UNC ranked 41st worldwide, NCSU in 151-200 range.

Exactly. This is why I think Cincinnati could wind up being a Major player in the ACC.
The chance of having OSU play annually on a home and home basis open up fan interest in an instate rivalry that would sell out PBS and increase increase UC's fan base way beyond filling up Nippert stadium. Ohio would have 2 power 5 schools if added to ACC. PBS would always be full when most schools come to town. A sleeping Giant in a real Football State.
