Johns Hopkins to join Big Ten Monday
http://insidelacrosse.com/news/2013/05/3...ten-monday

Multiple sources have told Inside Lacrosse that Johns Hopkins will on Monday announce its intentions to join the Big Ten as an affiliate member in men's and women's lacrosse. By extension, the announcement keys the formation of Big Ten men's and women's lacrosse as league-sponsored sports for the first time.

Great move for Johns Hopkins, they will be a nice little addition to the BTN and CIC.

I don't know much about the "other" sports in the Big Ten. I always thought that the Big Ten did not have affiliate members, which is one reason Notre Dame could not join the Big Ten.

Also thought that all members of the Big Ten were CIC members too. This move confuses me.

based on what? the B1G is a conference that they can win on a regular basis, there is no lightweight program currently in the ACC, it's alot easier getting past Maryland as opposed to Duke,UNC,ND,SYR & UVA

None of the reports I've seen ever indicated that the ACC was pursuing Johns Hopkins for membership.

Ok, so the ACC bent its own self over. Even worse. Don't get caught up in the semantics. The Big Ten has firmly taken a nice bite out of the ACC's footprint in the last several months.

So ND as a partial member is bad and not adding JH as a partial member is also bad.

Some people will complain no matter what.

JHU is in a unique position since in addition to being a nationally-ranked research institution, the only Division 1 sports they sponsor are men's and women's lacrosse. From that perspective, they would be a "full-member" and welcome addition to the CIC.

I don't see the B1G adding any hockey-only schools, since none of the available candidates have the academic cache of a JHU.

That number is too low.

Yeah! In your face, ACC lacrosse. You are next ACC ultimate frisbee! Soon the B1G will own the Olympic sports world! Boo-ha-ha-ha! Boo-ha-ha-ha!

Are you trying to say that 16 million people care about college lacrosse? That's probably a good ballpark estimate. That's a huge number, and makes the topic worthy of discussion.

So the ACC won both men and women's lacrosse national titles this year and somehow should fear the B1G? Common sense should tell everyone there is no way the state of Maryland would have allowed JH to go to the ACC. Not after what's going on with Maryland.

Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. The ACC and B1G will dominate for years to come.

I'm not really sure why everyone's getting so worked up for an associate membership. I mean, Cal Poly is an associate member of the PAC-12 for swimming and nobody makes a big deal out of it.

Lacrosse's influence is about *who* cares about lacrosse - i.e. a disproportionate share of business leaders and people on Wall Street, the portions of the Mid-Atlantic that the Big Ten has been targeting for expansion, etc.

In TV parlance, there are so-called "empty calories", meaning programs that draw large numbers of viewers but don't get very good advertising revenue because they draw downscale audiences (WWE and UFC are prime examples of that). Lacrosse is basically the polar opposite of that where it's in the realm of golf and tennis as an extremely upscale sport (so they get much better advertising revenue than what their overall ratings would suggest in a vacuum).

Maybe it's a midwest/mid-Atlantic thing. Here in California I've never heard anyone ever utter the word lacrosse unless it was related to the Duke lacrosse team scandal. I doubt you could even find 1 person out of 100 who could describe what the game or the equipment look like.

I've heard more discussion of and enthusiasm for curling here in LA than for lacrosse.
