Another idea I don't like.
This isn't soccer.

RE: conference realignment idea
That soccer leagues in Europe figured it out first has no bearing. It's just a rational method for any sport, but especially in the case that you have 100+ teams competing with each other.

It is however Football, just like "soccer".
I love the idea, though put Toledo in Tier 1 instead of Kent State.

RE: conference realignment idea
This is college football, not professional soccer. Ignoring that this wouldn't happen, you can't do that to college teams. And, oh yeah, they "figured it out" which is why so many other sports, especially in America, do this.

RE: conference realignment idea
I think CFB is the only "sport" where actual competitiveness and the ability to win games is almost irrelevant (maybe completely irrelevant) compared to the amount of money the program has.

The reality is that teams are ALREADY put into divisions but artificially so... that is, you have teams in the so-called "power" conferences that are not there because they gained that status by virtue of their competitive results, but because of off-the-field factors. All that progression/relegation is, in reality, is a structure to place teams into groups based on what has happened on the field.
(It's not actually substantive, but where most of us are concerned, I'd think earning your status--as in progression/relegation--is much more in-line with the American spirit than what we have had handed down to us and continue to use today... which, fwiw, is more like the caste system one would associate with India.)

RE: conference realignment idea
IF you were going to do this it should be on a 2 or 4 year basis. That way you have an even number of home and away games to go by. On a 1-year basis, a team could draw a couple of tough road games and get demoted unfairly.
The other issue I see is that certain schools want to play each other in all sports. That makes it difficult if the sports are in different tiers. If they just play each other anyway tiers become useless.

RE: conference realignment idea
Not to sound cynical, but none of this matters in CFB. The "haves" have all the power, and will pervert the system to keep it that way. There are just too many variables that are controlled by the P5 schools, along with the networks, to ever have a fair system for establishing a true national champion. As log as even one school is excluded from competing for a true national championship opportunity, CFB is equivalent to watching Jai Alai. It's fixed and scripted, and their national championship trophy isn't worth the cheap crystal it's made of. As a moderate Republican (meaning I agree with most of their platform, minus the religious dogma) it pains me to say that I can't wait until the government finally gets involved and shuts this cartel down.

But CFB is about more than the game, at least to the major programs. It is as much about the tailgating, pageantry, reunions, road trips, water cooler chatter on Monday, and planning your travel schedule years in advance as it is playing the most quality team. As an SEC fan, I would rather play Ole Miss year in and year out than, say, Oklahoma State. Is there any comparison in their recent football success? Not even close, but the Ole Miss experience year in and year out is what is valued. It is not just about matching up successful programs; it is about tradition, rivalries, and having a great time.
Also, it is hammered every day on this board, but academic association is very important to these schools. Athletics is a great way to get together and form bonds. Every football game serves the purpose of a business convention. Those informal talks among the upper brass of universities in the football stadium suites is where a lot of major business gets done, just like a golf course for CEO's and politicians.

What makes you think this is unique to college football? It happens all the time in politics, business, society, etc. None of this is new. It's been going on for thousands of years...
