Am I reading the following stats correctly? It shows that Stainback has 8 gdp for season, which leads #2 Stringer by 1.

http://www.riceowls.com/sports/m-basebl/...mcume.html

I think you are, which seems to weaken Walt's assertion that Stainback's GDP propensity is unusual.

Two things work the other way, though

1. Stringer has a little more power than Ford, so there is more upside when he swings away. .398 slugg vs. .325

2. Since Ford hits leadoff more than Stringer does, he probably has had many more at bats with bases empty. When the bases are empty, it is impossible to gdp.

In my opinion, Ford hits into more GIDP because of his plate discipline. Frankly he puts the ball in play somewhere when protecting the plate. He works the count well always protecting the plate. Again, if someone has to put the ball in play with an 0-2 count, Ford is the guy I want up.

The 6-8 are for stolen bases. Ford has 5 successful sac bunts on the season, and I'm guessing his success rate has been well below 50%; probably closer to 33% (if even that high). Again, for a singles hitter such as Ford, success rate on sac bunts should be close to 75%, at a minimum. His technique is all wrong, and he more often than not pops the bunt in the air (either fair or foul), as opposed to bunting down on the ball.

Yes, I realized that it was for stolen bases and corrected it, but you were too fast for me. :)

Where are the stats for sacrifice bunts btw? Is it on that page somewhere. I am missing it...

Edit: I realize you had a typo and were referring to gdp's.

Sac bunts (sh) are listed just before stolen bases (sb) and just after sac flies (sf). BTW, IMO, the reason Ford was moved to the bottom of the order mid-season (until Byrd started to really struggle) was because he continuously failed to move Byrd to 2B after Leon walked.

Ah, I see there is the "sh" stat.

Definition I found:

SH—Sacrifice hit: number of sacrifice bunts which allow runners to advance on the basepaths

I assume this may also include advancing runners on non-bunt attempts?

No. Sac hits on bunts that advance the runner. In such successful attempts the batter does not add an out to his stats (as is the case with a sac fly).

It doesn't hurt that he rarely hits the ball in the air.

From Fitt:

Quote:It was reminiscent of the end of the 2012 Eugene Super Regional, when Oregon left fielder lost Jimmy Rider’s fly ball in the sun, allowing the winning run to score for Kent State in the ninth.

Interesting that two years in a row the Ducks have had a sun incident. Their field is oriented wrong, perhaps? Their 3rd base line is roughly east west. At Reckling E-W is roughly on a line between first and third. A few degrees difference makes all the difference.

Way to go Owls! Keep the streak going!

Felt sorry for the USF kid. Coming from San Fran, it's probably the first time he's ever seen sunlight...

MLB Rule 1.04:
"It is desirable that the line from home base through the pitchers plate to second base shall run East-Northeast."

[ETA: The rule would have ballparks oriented at 67.5*; PK is at 130*; Reckling at 168*.]

That sun is going to cause both teams problems during the first several innings tonight. You'd think this benefits the home team since they've played in it all year long (though their night games usually start an hour later than our scheduled 6:00pm PT start time).

Heck, Jay even watched!

Awesome. Great win today, plus comments by my all time favorite* Rice fan. Makes for a superlative game thread.

[*I've never met Mr. SC, but the poetry of his posts, eloquently expressing his love for son, sport, and program, was fantastic.]

Wow, I never expected such a welcome back!

Thanks so much, and Rice Baseball is one of those rare, rare places where people still care about their team and their players, rather than rooting for an individual, or just for the beer guy.

And this Board is even rarer, a place where literacy and baseball can coexist.

Having just completed a 5 year tour of the great American minor leagues, I know about rarity...

Three JP Audio highlights from Friday's game -- Perrott's homer, Geoff's nailing of would-be Duck base stealer and Fox's winning RBI -- can be heard here: https://soundcloud.com/ricevoice/053113usf

Are there any links to video highlights (rather than replaying the entire game on ESPN3?)

You don't have to watch the entire game from the beginning - the bar at the bottom of the screen that shows the progress of the video is actually a slider. You can grab it with the mouse and move it to any part of the game - of course finding a particular inning is trial and error. I wanted to watch the last inning and that was easy to find.

Thanks! I'd recalled -- incorrectly -- that the ESPN3 replay feeds were all or nothing.

I am surprised that ESPN hasn't posted highlights of each regional game.

Since I was at work when it happened live, I spent part of this morning watching our Friday game with USF (skipping though some parts), and compiling this timecoded guide to highlights:

0:26:00 -- Commentators' discussion about the wind and bright, sunny skies ends prophetically: "We'll see if that wind and sky has any factor in today's play."

B5:
1:19:57 -- Byrd singles
1:20:33 -- Perrott homers!

T7
1:44:30 -- USF singles
1:46:45 -- Perrott nails would-be base stealer at 2nd.

B7:
1:54:10 -- Byrd HBP
1:57:00 -- Perrott singles

T8:
2:07:00 -- USF single
2:12:30 -- SB
2:14:20 -- 6-3 groundout, runner to 3rd.
2:16:40 -- 4-2 overthrow, tying run scores

B11:
3:31:40 -- Highlights of the game so far
3:32:40 -- Hoelscher singles
3:37:00 -- Hoelscher out trying to steal 3rd
3:42:00 -- Commentator notes how USF's LFer seems to be bothered by the sun, often shielding his eyes from it.
3:42:15 -- Perrott reaches first on swinging strikeout/passed ball.
3:44:35 -- Fox wins it on a soft liner that the LFer can't find in the sun!!!
