Two good things. Joe back up to the majors and Chad Durbin gone.

I think it reflects on how competitive MLB is that Joe Savery, arguably the greatest player in Rice history, is--to date--a borderline MLB player

I guess you could say Savery is arguably our best 2-way player (hitting and pitching) but I'm not sure I'd put him in the top 3 overall (which would be IMO Berkman, Cruz and possibly Rendon or one of the big 3 pitchers from 2002-04?). It's just tough to put together a definitive list with so many possibilities to choose from (Thames, Sinisi, Baugh, Anderson, St. Clair, Charlton or maybe another pre-Graham guy or two).

RE: Savery back with the Phillies
Not really trying to start a debate. It is likely a question of specialization.

Rendon and Berkman were better hitters than Joe, and Neimann and perhaps others was a better pitcher. I wasn't around and there was no internet when Cruz was playing.

Speaks well of Joe that he is somewhere on the list of greatest hitters in Rice history AND made it to MLB as a pitcher.

What I can say about Savery is this
1. he was quite likely the best player on the team from the moment he set foot on campus
2. in the three seasons, we went to Omaha twice and took a super regional to 3 games in the other.
