FGCU sounding like ETSU 10 years ago
There's a long article (5 pages) from FGCU local news site about the A-Sun changes. There's a quote that sounded like what I used to read on this board when ETSU first arrived.
“Things may change. Schools may get to the point where they don’t see the dollars working out the way they may like (in football). There’ll be schools that will drop it.”

Sounds like they need new leadership, or they'd better be ready to play D2 caliber schools for the longhaul.

Is that Paul Stanton lurking in the background?

If you say it enough times maybe it'll come true, or atleast that's what they're thinking.
Sad thing with Gulf Coast is if they added football tommorrow the Sun Belt would be all over trying to add them.

This is true. Yet when we add it the only conference interested is the Socon, which I admit is better than the A-Sun, but it's not the Sun belt.

Well, perhaps some on field success with us and UT-C might entice the Sun Belt to take a look.

The last ten years took their toll. We have some catching up to do now.

Even if ETSU hadn't dropped football the Sun Belt wouldn't be interested, unless ETSU had managed historic success in the past decade. It's not merely the absence of football that takes ETSU out of the conversation with the Sun Belt, it's a lack of competitive football. ETSU fans shouldn't be lamenting the fact that the Bucs aren't moving to FBS. ETSU fans should be hoping for a football program that can achieve sustained success at the FCS level, something that's never happened before. Solve that puzzle before you look for bigger and better things. ETSU couldn't have caught up to App St/Ga Southern with football success in the past decade. Focus on the next 5-10 years, pushing for success at the FCS level, that way ETSU is positioned to be ready to move up the next time there's an opportunity.

Disagree with the first statement. The SunBelt was interested in UTC, and they haven't done anything in football since I can remember.

Well hopefully it'll be funded at a level to be successful. Full compliment of scholarships, facilities and real effort to win. I don't know that the university has ever really given a true effort to push football, but hopefully it happens now.

I heard in the SoCOn teleconference that the SoCon commish has seen the blueprints of the stadium. He said it will be on campus and ready for the 2016 season.

Was it a rendering or just a blueprint of where it would sit on the campus map?

Try selling that to UNC-Charlotte, Ga State, South Alabama, and I'm sure some others of recent. Futhermore, it should be noted that ETSU will be funding a Sun Belt Conference level athletic program once football is up and running. ETSU consistently spent more on athletics these past ten years than GA Southern. The problem was the gross mismanagement of ETSU athletics. Had the money been properly spent, football and basketball could have had sustained success, likely been competitive, and perhaps achieved historic success. We all know what happened now --- they blew millions and millions on the minor sports in a dead end conference for a useless all sports trophy. 20/20 hindsight shows that thing for what it was, a dismal, abject disaster. That's why ETSU did not maintain pace with the GA Southerns of the college athletic world. The funding was there, the leadership and management was not.

Like I speculated in another post, the SoCon delegation had to see some football stuff that impressed. Otherwise, they're talking to Coastal and/or Kennesaw.

Don't know. What I posted was pretty much word for word what he said.

Dr. Sander spoke to the football brunch this morning via teleconference from Nashville. He said the prime spot for the new stadium would be over where the maintenance facility it now and in that parking lot. Of course nothing is final yet and anything could change. I drove by and looked at it and I believe it would be a great spot. The press box would have a view of the entire campus plus the mountains in the background. It is right at the end of the dormitory row and an easy walk for students. I hope we can break ground ASAP!

Is this where the large parking area behind the CPA is?

I believe that is it. Another important criterion is that it is well out of the flood zone of the practice fields below the CPA. It is high ground and should be well suited for a football field.

There is a good bit of room other there. I wonder where they move that maintenance facility.
