Interesting enough, another great punter came from USM - the great KC Chiefs punter, Jerrel Wilson. Played 15 seasons with the Chiefs in their early glory years.
Probably the greatest before Ray Guy.

I had no clue that Jerrel Wilson was a Golden Eagle. That must have been 40-45 years ago. He may well have been the best punter of all time prior to Ray Guy.

A little more about him Old Tiger. Must have been quite a character as well.

Jerrel Wilson

Yeah, the Corvette story was great, but this one was my favorite.....
Quote:Sensing that Jerrel might’ve lost a few yards, rookie head coach Paul Wiggin brought in a number of contenders for Jerrel’s job in 1975.

Jerrel’s response? "Well, the way I got ‘em thinking," he later recalled, "was to ask ‘em if they were inhaling or exhaling when they hit the ball." The mental gymnastics soon meant all the candidates for his job were waived long before the regular season.

It was absolutely a more simple life and game in that era; probably not as innocent as we remember, but more simple.

He was indeed a great punter. Not many teams can say that they make an 11th round draft pick and set that position aside for 17 years.

Outside of Verlander and a few others, I'd say Nancy Lieberman.

And only 1 player in the history of college football has won the RAY GUY award back to back: LA Tech's Ray Allen in 2011 & 2012. 04-rock

Obadele Thompson... won bronze in the 2000 olympics

He actually had the fastest 100 in the world, but it was wind aided at 9.69. Only Tyson Gay and Usain Bolt have clocked faster times.

He did it with a lot of style as well.

Robert Jones, LB.........first team all-american, co-mvp peach bowl,#6 first round pick of dallas cowboys, two super bowl rings

(Jones has one son at Texas and now one at ECU playing football)

In fairness LaShawn Merritt also went to ODU

But, ODU doesn't have Track and Field and his degree says East Carolina University.

Actually he never received his degree from ECU or ODU. He is currently enrolled at Norfolk State for his BS in Business.

2002, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Vonetta Flowers (graduate of UAB) became the "first black athlete (male or female) -- from any country--to ever win an Olympic Winter Games gold medal." She'd been born 37 years earlier in Birmingham, Alabama, Flowers and her U.S. teammate Jill Bakken (far right) finished 1st in the 2-woman bobsled, winning the 1st U.S. medal in that event in 46 years.

[Image: gal_jets-bryanthomas.jpg][Image: a-thomas-042002.jpg]

UAB's defensive end Bryan Thomas was the first UAB football player to be taken in the first round of the NFL Draft. He was the 22nd pick of the New York Jets in 2002.

[Image: 1104_atldal12_RoddyReceptionsLeader.jpg][Image: p1_white_roddy.jpg]

Roddy White was selected in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft out of UAB.

Graeme McDowell (2002 UAB graduate) won the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, where he ended a 40-year drought for Europeans at the tournament. As a senior with the Blazers in 2002, McDowell won six of twelve college events and the Haskins Award, given to the outstanding collegiate golfer in the United States.

Ray Guy belongs in the NFL Hall of Fame. I don't understand why he wasn't voted in in his first year of eligibility.
