I think my Zune might have finally bit the dust. I have around 45gb of music that filled up my 80gb Zune.

I rip all my cds in Windows Media Player. I was never that into ipods and what not.

Anyone got any suggestions? If its not large enough to hold all of my music then then I am not even interested.

iPod is probably going to be your only option unless you want to deal with some sort of SD card additions. options are 160GB Classic or 64GB Touch (if you have a smartphone, get the classic. $150 cheaper)

Cowon (a Korean Company) does still make a Hard Drive MP3 player that is sold on Amazon but the reviews are awful.

why not put it on a phone? it's insane to walk around with multiple devices

1) In the future ... always rip your audio into FLAC and high bitrate mp3.
2) If you go the smartphone route (which I'd recommend) get one with an external micro SD slot so you can increase the base memory by at least 32 GB, possibly 64.
3) Beyond that, you could get a Sansa with micro SD and get to the capacities you need ... beyond that iPod.

Already have a cellphone. Prefer them as separate devices.

Give me a little more 411 on that. I have heard the term FLAC thrown around with some folks I know. For all the music I have, I own the cd.

My brother had gotten a Sansa, he wasn't overly impressed or unimpressed with it.

FLAC -> Free Lossless Audio Codec

FLAC is a truly LOSSLESS copy of the source audio. It produces an audio file as good as your original source. The downside is the files can be large (20-30 MB per typical song I think) and support is greatly less for playback among standalone audio players.

You've still got the CDs, so unless you want to carry around the highest quality audio available for your entire collection, you'll be fine sticking with what you've been doing.

If you DO end up with the massive iPod, and want to re-rip all your music at a higher quality, FLAC won't work on the iPod. If you go that route, I suggest using iTunes to rip it all and just pick the highest quality setting.

Microsoft rolled the zune os into their Windows 8 phone and merged the music service with Xbox Music. If you want to stick with Microsoft, you'll need a Win 8 phone.

Nokia's lumia phones are some of the best smart phones of any OS variety on the market today and all operate on Win Phone 8

dude, he said he has 45 GB of music. If you converted all that to FLAC it would be substantially more than 45 gigs.

Swoosh, I know you were a big proponent of spotify but doesn't that require a data plan for use of its streaming? I'm not usually at a laptop or my pc for most of my music listening. And I believe you said you couldn't rip tracks to save them.

I posted on their tech support forums. Kind of odd they changed all to XBX Music and whatever.

man it was tough breaking out my old walkman. I still kept around all my old tapes. Broke out some Soundgarden: Superunknown, STP: Tiny Music..., and some Black Crowes: Shake your Moneymaker.

Hey, it was my only portable option.

why not go out and pick up a $50-$100 Sandisk Sansa player to hold you over until you figure out which direction you're going.

After you get your new set up going, it'd make a great workout player

I checked out a few ipods over at Best Buy and looked at some used ones at GameStop. Might go check out TradeIt tomorrow and see what they got.

.wma doesn't work with iPod, but there are free converters out there to get your files to .mp3. There are also hacks for the iPod to sync with Windows Media Player, but I doubt they're really worth the hassle.

Check the rip settings in Media Player. You might be able to rip to .mp3, and just do one massive conversion of your current collection.

Or, just go all-in on iTunes. I haven't used WMP in a long time, but iTunes is MUCH more functional than it was a few years ago. Playlist creation is pretty intuitive and fairly powerful (there are still a few options I would like to see, though).

Ohh, an interesting tale this has now become.

I did their keypad commands to reset the player earlier today and nothing, not even when I had it hooked up via usb. Now, tonight, when I turned on my PC, it magically turned on and went into a firmware update. So far, so good.
