I won't shut up until all 10 FBS conference champions are represented in the playoff. Higher rated teams could have byes.

This may be the first time I have ever agreed with a statement from Dodds! Of course, everyone wants an 8 team playoff...

The P5 are never going to get behind a 16 team playoff just so the AAC or SBC champ can automatically participate.

8 teams with no AQs for anyone is fair and will let legitimate GO5 teams have a chance

Nobody in the P5 would have an argument. Don't like being left out? Win your conference. Nobody from the G5 could complain. Don't like being left out? Finish with the highest G5 ranking. The three wildcards would shut everyone up.

The problem is that this would basically expose all bowl games as being totally useless and stupid, and nobody would go.

You're assuming that the bowls would go away. I'd argue that an 8-team playoff could make the bowls even more relevant. Keep the Rose Bowl as Big Ten vs. Pac-12, send the SEC champ to the Sugar, ACC champ to the Orange and Big 12 champ to Cotton (or Fiesta or whoever wants to pay the most), fill in the 3 wild card spots and there's your 8-team playoff that keeps the bowl system intact while also spreading the opponents around enough to have a bracket that makes sense. (The main roadblock would be if the SEC and Big 12 insist on keeping their bowl, which would cause the matchups in the Orange and Cotton to be way more lopsided and likely untenable for a playoff.) If the political/legal pressure is too great to limit this to the power conferences, throw in one spot to the best Gang of Five champ and leave the other 2 spots as pure wild cards.

I believe any 8 team playoff that makes it just as hard or harder for the SEC to have 3 teams among the 8 is a non-starter for the SEC. Why would they agree? Yes, an extra round means more money, but 2 teams out of 8 is worth less than 2 teams out of 4 most years.

If there are 8 then there needs to be a possibility of 4 teams coming from one conference if 4 teams are among the 8 best.

It would be unfair for them to be a smaller league with one less game than the rest.

And of course you are hoping/thinking this would provide an opportunity for UC ...........right.

No playoff without at least 10 teams has a shot at being legitimate and subjective. If every conference champion is involved then nobody has a legitimate complaint about not getting in.

I think the SEC already won the "argument" about the no-autobid playoff format last year, and that the SEC will insist on it for any expansion of the playoff. When it becomes an 8-team playoff, all 8 teams will be chosen by the selection committee, and there won't be autobids for anyone. Same as the 4-team playoff.

(I'm not saying that's a better or worse way to go, just saying that the politics of the system mean that this is what's going to happen.)

That wasn't the SEC. That was to shut up the G5 who would complain about non-deserving BCS conference champs.

When we go to 8, it will be because the Big 10, SEC and ESPN want to make sure the B10 and SEC champs are in every year. So it will go back to the 5 conference champs in.

Everyone knows that eventually it will turn into an 8 team playoff. We have had enough comments come from the Mock Committee held for last season that showed everyone there was uncomfortable with just picking 4 teams. Moving to 8 is inevitable.

What we see here I think is Dodds knowing that the Big 12 needs it to happen sooner rather than later. An 8 team playoff will definitely have Big 12 participation but a 4 team playoff might not as evidenced by last season.

Dodds is just trying to push the timetable forward by starting the public conversation about moving to 8.

8 = p5 conf champs + highest rated g5 champ + 2 at large.
12 = 10 conf champs + 2 at large. Top 4 schools get 1st round byes. First round the week after Conf Championship Games
16 = 10 conf champs + 6 at large. Round of 16 the week after Conf Championship Games

If you think the SEC only plays patsies then you have not looked at SEC schedules and do not know college football. The SEC may not always be the perennial college football behemoth there are now, but I like our chances.

Sure they will. A true champion can never be crowned without including all conference champs.

Gonna bet that nobody outside the SBC believes that their champ's forced inclusion legitimizes a playoff.

The truth is D1 is getting too big and there are too many conferences at wildly different average levels of support and attendance and the NCAA needs to recognize this and redraw the divisions instead of trying to cram everybody into one division so conferences averaging less than 30k don't get their feelings hurt.

I think some folks are worried that a New Division means their teams will be completely cut off. If it is done WITHIN the NCAA then that won't necessarily be the case at all. There will still be Bowls and I wouldn't be surprised to see some kind of compromise given by the Majors in order to get the support of everyone else. Such a possibility is that if we move to an 8 team playoff, one slot will be saved for the top ranked team from the lower division. There will still be plenty of games played against teams from the "lower division".

I think the only difference would be some different rules. Recruiting rules, division rules, length of season rules. Right now the Majors have to do everything the same as the rest. I am sure that is their major issue, not that they want to harm the programs of the "Lesser" schools.

How is a 8 team single elimination tourney the only way to crown a true champ? We might like it better, but it is just as arbitrary as the BCS. This selection committee is not going to select any team ranked outside of the top 10. So you will see the same familiar conference faces just like the old system.

Expansion to 8 even with the conference champ requirement will leave spots for the Go5 to go and get curb-stomped by the number 1 and 2 ranked SEC and B1G teams. The argument of fairness fall away when one realizes we are talking about adding extra games to a sport where injuries can have life long repercussions and the players are not compensated performance.

RE: Dodds wants an 8-team CFB playoff
Someone said awhile back that the selection committee since it's 'voting' is just a BCS expansion, a legitimate playoff is conference champs. That said, it will never be expanded to include the GOF champions. In a legitimate 'division' scenario (like the NFL) the quality teams ebb and flow, and are generally evenly distributed among the divisions. Among the P5 and GO5 conferences, that's hardly the case, as conferences are not divisions. For it to work, you would have to redistribute all the 'good' schools among all the conferences. Otherwise, the SBC or cUSA champ will always displace an obviously much stronger SEC school. Won't happen. The only way conference champs get in is if the P5 separate.

Now, you could admit the P5 champs, and include the 3 access slots (8 team). It's a hybrid that somewhat can satisfy everyone, as playoff format for the P5 with access for a highly ranked GO5 school (who would have to beat out, by rankings, SEC etc. schools). Otherwise, just wild card slots for the P5. This is the option that might prevent a separation.

Either way, it needs to/will expand to 8 very quickly.
