Not nearly as awkward as the "Follow Along on the Victory Marathon" message
How ironic that Jack Kemp -- added to the ticket to bring "youth" and "energy" -- died several years ago at age 73, while Dole is still doing the talk-show rounds at age 89 (90 in July).

I think that's the first picture of Kemp's wife I have ever seen.
Anyway, Jack Kemp had an almost freakish level of energy, even compared to other Type-A politicians. He was 61 at the time of the campaign but seemed much younger than that. The picture above doesn't reflect that, of course (which is why it was posted), but still...
Kemp had actively campaigned for the GOP nomination in 1987-88 ( against Dole and Bush/41) but didn't get far; and then gave a lot of thought to going for it again in 1993-94 but decided not to.
Some very interesting books have been written ("What It Takes" by Richard Ben Cramer, "The Making of the President" series by Ted White, etc.) about the personal, non-ideological qualities needed for a successful presidential candidacy. As much as I admired Jack Kemp and believe that he was a positive part of American politics in the 1970s-80s-90s, there is no denying that he was always lacking something in that area.
