http://hamptonroads.com/2013/05/wheres-odus-loyalty

Was having a pretty heated discussion about this at work today with some co workers. Educate me.

RE: ODU fans???
The guy who wrote this hasn't had basketball tixs since the ted opened at least. Reseating is done on a regular basis. Also odu made it clear they work on a point system meaning loyalty counts but only for so much. Donation is another thing. Oduf made it clear since start of football how it would work out. Uf is worse. Students have a tough time getting tixs and last time I checked it worked the same way.

We do have a waiting list with the rules clearly spelled out. Guy who wrote this meh..probably looking for something for nothing to shut up. Basically put up or shut up or just stay home. Better yet watch from the free view at the parking lot. View is amazing during a game.

I knew this going into things from the very first day I looked into getting season tickets for myself. Everyone I know was aware and understands how it works.

RE: ODU fans???
ODU just needs a bigger stadium. Then the premium seats will be fought for by the biggest donors. You can buy season tickets at VA TECH right now without donating a dime. They also have a donor priority seating policy. The difference is 20k seats vs 70k seats.

RE: ODU fans???
I have had tickets since day one (for the past four years) and have contributed to ODAF every year. It's simple. You pay attention, you know the rules, and if you want tickets, you donate to ODAF. Priority points are based on a number of factors, the most critical factor being the amount of the current year donation. These folks didn't pay attention, didn't know the rules, didn't donate, and didn't get tickets. And then they complain? Get a grip!

P. S.

All the season tickets are sold. Obviously most of us understood, are quite happy, and are READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!

RE: ODU fans???
Yeah, I think most people knew about how the ticket sales would work. If you don't donate to ODAF then you will have a very unlikely shot to get tickets, simple as that. Tons of other colleges do this if I'm not mistaken. Hopefully the whole process was easy and simple to follow (I'm still a student so I don't exactly know).

Sadly, people like Mr. Jenkins will be left behind for now and I hope that he is able and willing to buy tickets when the stadium expands.

The point isn't that the person didn't know the rules, he just disagrees with them.

RE: ODU fans???
Thanks guys.

I'll admit I know little about ODU outside a little about your basketball success. What I do know is your have great fan support, a FBS ready budget WITHOUT football revenue yet and you are in a area that seems to be starved for some football.

Certainly one of, if not the most impressive CUSA add. Its going to be a interesting couple of years. A load of new teams biting at the bit to prove themselves.

RE: ODU fans???
Maybe his beef would lessen with more stadium capacity but its pretty much standard practice now that

Donate + season tix + longevity of... = better seats.
Higher donations+ more season tix + more longevity of... = better seats.

Granted there are some variables of how much each is weighted.

*********************

I hope you guys can get your stadium expansion plans lined up soon because it is looking more and more to me that the bottleneck could cool some of your fan support...... and fan support from growing.

What a good problem to have.

All signs are showing that Old Dominion, Charlotte, and UTSA will have very strong support for football.

ODU made $2 million new revenue in the re-seating process. http://hamptonroads.com/2013/05/odu-gets...t-requests

It will not be going away because a few fans feel disenfranchised.

I just wrote a response to Mr. Jenkins letter to the editor. Hopefully it is printed! If not the gist was where was HIS loyalty for the previous decades of ODU sports?? He is basically a football-only bandwagon jumper!

The reality is that continued growth of our bandwagon football fans, just like VCU's bandwagon basketball fans, will be crucial to the continued growth of the program.

the letter writer doesn't state that they're an ODU alum, so they are squarely in the football fan only category.

I'd file this in the same folder as the Norfolk State fan who wrote a letter to the editor complaining our crowd was too loud when NSU's offense was on the field at a playoff game in 2011.

Non-alum fans vary greatly. I myself am not an alum, however I have had season tickets for football since the first hour they went on sale. I have also had bskb. season tickets. I attend all sorts of events on a per game basis including baseball, women's bskb., soccer, field hockey, etc.

I admit that when I first found out that I might get shut out of football because I wasn't a contributor to the athletic foundation, I was a bit upset. After giving it a little thought I came to the realization that as a fan I must bear some of the economic responsability outside of just purchasing tickets, which mostly only covers overhead. The students are already burdened enough. Although I'm not wealthy I can afford 25 bucks a month in order to keep my football tickets. There is no way I am going to miss my Monarchs on Saturdays, and it's for the good of the program. That is a prime example of a win-win proposition.

GO MONARCHS!

RE: ODU fans???
Me Thinks the guy who wrote the letter is acting out of frustration and is also acting naive about the financial problems that arise with move ups. Sure we have to pay a decent salary for good coaches at least the conference average inorder to retain them and then scholarships, trave expenses, stadium expansion/maintenance, advertising and marketing and we have to deal with low ticket prices as a relatively new startup and with students paying good amount of it with Ath fees.I mean is this that difficult to understand? Colleges/Universities have no big franchises to back them with money it has to come from students and fans some how right?

And I think when we expand well still sell out. The flex seats have me worried. Selig is betting utsa or other tx fans won't travel well. I'm not so sure about that.

Yup same thing with east coast teams i don't expect us, charlotte, MT and WKU bringing more fans to texas either. Just to throw a number out there i would say 1500~2000 tops and same thing with the texas schools but guys in the middle like Southern Miss, UAB and LaTech will definitely have slightly better numbers assuming the fan interest levels are same..
