Any chance this is why UMD cut swimming and diving?
http://communities.washingtontimes.com/n...l-sentenc/

Quote:At that 1986 kitchen table meeting, the [victim's family] had demanded that [swim coach] Rick Curl sign a statement admitting that he had had sex with their daughter. At some point that letter was given to the athletic director at University of Maryland, College Park where Curl had started coaching in 1987. In 1988 Curl quietly resigned from UMD and the university advised the [victim's] family to seek private legal counsel. It was in 1989 that the legal settlement was signed.

The University of Maryland had been informed of the abuse 25 years ago and did nothing about it. It did not alert the police or even USA Swimming; officials just asked Curl to go somewhere else.

Whether the university holds any responsibility has yet to be determined, but when Penn State’s football program was deemed responsible for the abuse committed by a few due to not reporting what it knew to the proper authorities, the NCAA came down hard.

Penn State will not be allowed to participate in any bowl games for years to come, massive scholarship reductions were imposed and the school was fined $60 million.

In a twist of fate that conspiracy theorist would love, University of Maryland, College Park’s swim and dive team was cut along with six other sports in July of 2012 for financial reasons, coincidentally the same month the process to ban Rick Curl from USA Swimming began.

There is no longer is a program to punish, no scholarships to take away.

Doubt it. Swimming and Diving is a popular and easy cut for schools.

It is also an entirely different situation than Penn st. The author suggesting they are related is absurd and sickening

Exactly. While it may have played a small role, that Maryland abuse case a quarter century ago wasn't the main reason swimming & diving was cut. Not when other sports were cut as well that Rick Curl had no association with - like men's tennis, women's water polo and men's cross country.

With Maryland leaving the ACC, maybe they will bring those sports back in the future. We'll see.

Cincinnati did the opposite. We've reinstated swimming and diving. We have a Natatorium that opened in 2005. At one point or about two years later, Mike Thomas decided to stop offering scholarships. Now the scholarships have been reinstated. Coach Tuberville is giving up 300K from his wages to fund these programs and help the athletic department.

The reason UMD cut Swimming and Diving is that the program couldn't raise the money needed to run it. The only program under threat that came close was Outdoor Track and Field, so they kept that.
