Likin' that. 02-13-banana

More on him at the AL site: ELY

Huh? http://www.maxpreps.com/athletes/KHSCtlw...ip-ely.htm says he ran for 157 yards his senior year in high school on 31 attempts.

Maybe what he meant to say is that he was used to running the team in HS and he wasn't getting to do that at Alabama.

Good catch. Well, based on his stats he's clearly a pass first, run second QB. He still averaged 5 ypc, though. Maybe his HS team had a good RB, too, so he didn't really have to run that much, except when flushed out of the pocket. That doesn't really jive with what his dad implied, though, does it?

His RB was James Wilder Jr...he's at FSU now. I do not recall Ely being a runner...he was athletic, but more known for his passing and game management.

UT needed to recruit experience at QB after recruiting/development failures in past few classes. From that standpoint, this is big.

Gee, and I thought we had two very highly regarded freshman quarterbacks on the team this coming season.

I'm guessing they mean Blackburn and Macon. The two new guys are still short on experience even if they turn out to be great.

That's the thing I've been concerned about. The season is only a few months away now and, honestly, I can't see either of the freshmen being ready to keep the beat if TO would go out. This guy might be able to do it.

And, who knows, we might be able to have a dual-QB situation again! 05-stirthepot

So, what do you think...Ely backs up TO this year and starts next year while the freshmen develop? No doubt it will be an interesting battle for the starting spot next year, though.

Ely has to sit out this fall, can't even dress I think. My guess at QB for 2013-14 is; Owens, Woodside, Blackburn. Redshirting the Julian kid from Hilton Head.

IIRC, Blackburn RS this past season, so of course he is short on experience. No need to play him when we had Dantin & TO.

OMG, I am too stupid to live! (I guess I'm over-excited about this.) Right, Ely cannot backup TO this year. 03-banghead So, next year we have an interesting battle for starting QB, Ely likely has a leg up due to experience and the (current) freshman develop. Do I have it straight now?

I don't know what to think about Blackburn after the talk that they were looking at him at TE.

Dan Cummins said that Saban helped direct Ely to Campbell.

And Cummins also said that Ely is pronounced Ealey.

AJ McCarron is set to play his final season for the Crimson Tide, who are coming off their third national championship in four seasons.

Blake Sims has the most experience behind McCarron on the roster. He played in 10 games last season and was 5-fo-10 for 77 yards. He also rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

Our transfer was 3/4 with 42 yards and a TD.

Got to feel it for the qb kids we signed this year. Hope Coach Campbell can balance all of their hopes and plans.

I'm very high on our two freshmen QB recruits. If bringing in a transfer who makes the competition better, that's fine. But just because a kid was at Alabama, doesn't mean he's got the starting job when Owens graduates, in my opinion..

Agree-----right now I would guess that Ely might have a bit of an edge in experience (certainly on Julian) but all three came out of HS with three star ratings (FWIW), so it should be interesting to see how it shakes out.

I doubt it, he could have told him to go to Michigan State, they have no qb's right now.

Saban kind of helped him out by getting in contact with toledo

I don't know about that. I wouldn't put my expectations that high. It's not like he was a started at 'Bama.
