Just Wondering....
Will the university re-establish the marching band? I may have missed this piece of news so I was just wondering.

RE: Just Wondering....
I actually know a music student who decided to come to ETSU because they didn't have a marching band and they wouldn't have to do that, wonder how they are feeling now.

Or probably graduate before they have to worry about come to think about it or transfer UT their senior year. I doubt they would be expected to play in the Pride of the Southland with only one year in the program.

RE: Just Wondering....
I think the addition of the marching band will increase freshman enrollment just as football will add enrollment. They increase the college experience of incoming students and make Fall semester special. That is why all of the other four year schools in Tennessee already have marching bands and football programs. ETSU's future is looking bright right now.

I too think the band is a plus. Some students may hate to play in it, but it is what it is. I think it will improve our basketball band as well.

Marching is not a requirement of a music major. At least not at UT and MTSU and I doubt it would be at ETSU. In fact, some that are in the marching band are not even music majors. If you can play and get through the auditions, then you march. I am sure it will be encouraged of music majors at ETSU, but it won't be a requirement.

Since this person is on scholarship and is required to play in the Pep band I am pretty sure they would be required to play in the marching band. They seem to think they would be required to as well.

I can only speak of UT and MTSU. My son is an upcoming freshman music major and he tried out for both school's marching bands and made both. But it was not a requirement that he do so. During each music school's audition (to be accepted into the music school only) he let them know at that time he would like to also audition for the marching band. His roommate will be playing drums but is a computer science major. But, ETSU may come up with different rules when it comes to marching. The biggest thing is that there will be a marching band w/football...hopefully.

Is your son on a music scholarship? The person I am speaking of is, they might not require a major to play in the band but they seem to have different rules about scholarship music majors such as the person having to playing in the Pep band.

RE: Just Wondering....
Personally, the band is the one aspect of football coming back that I am dreading. Its why I dont attend high school or college football games, and was why I did not attend ETSU games when they had it. I know it seems petty, and probably is. I have zero appreciation for wind instruments. I will be at the first ETSU game, even if I have to bear through the band.

I do think it will increase enrollment a small amount for the music department, which will be a plus for them. And I do think that for those who do like band, it will enrich the college experience which is a good thing.

A college football game without the band just wouldn't seem right.

No, he will be on academic scholarships, not music. I misread thinking your friend was a music major only and I was speaking of the standard music major in regards to marching.

As an alumnus of the Dobyns Bennett band I find your perspective interesting. The Kingsport community was always super supportive of the band and the band is well respected in the regional music community.

Personally I think it's great. I didn't attend ETSU right out of HS but if I had I would have loved to have been a part of the marching band. For most band kids we love it. While I was never in a college marching band it seems like it would be a lot of fun to put on those types of shows. Schools like UT or UGA always seem to attract large numbers of students for the band so I think it will be a big plus for the university.

College football without a marching band would be like going duck hunting without a gun.

Ditto! Love the band, twirlers, majorettes, and a drum major with a big, funny-looking hat. Bring it all on! Gracious, we've got 15,000 students; surely we can manage a halfway decent band.

RE: Just Wondering....
I was in the band. ETS's bands have been great. I especially miss some of the great drum lines we've had. Some wonderful halftime shows and tremendous support during the games. Pep rallys and other events.
It's so much a part of it all !!!
