Well... at least it is not Baton Rouge....

I was hoping for Starkville.

Rice is a sleeper. No mention by the talking heads.

Time for Rice to advance to Omaha without hosting.

RE: NCAA selection show
S.F.:
Offense: 267/.348/.371, 28 HRs, 48-72 SBs
Pitching: 3.46 ERA, .258 BAA, 2.6 strikeout:walk ratio, 6.6 Ks/game

They do have a couple stud relievers with exceptional stats; one of which has started 4 games and will likely get the start against us, IMO.

Offensively, they've got two guys hitting .335, with .900+ OPS, 7 or 8 HRs-- one of whom has 18 stolen bases; the other has a whopping 62 RBIs

#50 RPI, but a very solid #44 SoS (of course, most of those quality opponents came in mid-week games).

Yup, I would think we would see Haden Hinkle, that stud reliever who switched over to their rotation at the end of the year.

Like the matchups we got. Hopefully we can keep the streak going.

Agreed on Hinkle starting...rare to see a guy with twice as many wins as starts.

True, but he did throw 78 innings. Did CSC throw that many in his final two years as our workhorse/closer?

Kyle Peterson says the Eugene Regional is his pick in the "Best Pitching" category. A little love for WG and AK ... and mention of the tough USF bullpen.

So in the end, Rice, A&M, Sam Houston and UTSA, the Texas teams.

According to most, A&M was one of the final 5 teams selected. How the heck did they get a #2 seed with their road record (6-13), record vs. Top 100 (10-22) and finishing 8th in their conference? Clue-- their AD is on the Committee.

RE: NCAA selection show
Stitchead is probably pretty happy about the field: Four of the five teams he said should be in (but probably won't) are in: William & Mary, San Francisco, Coastal Carolina & UC-Santa Barbara. (His fifth pick, Pittsburgh, did not.)

On the other hand, two of the teams he said should NOT get in (but probably would) did not make the field: Auburn & Notre Dame. (Three others did: A&M, Illinois and Florida.)

On the ESPN show, there were only two lame questions for the committee head (by phone), who had even lamer answers: 1) Florida State's national seed despite it's 0-4 finish ("body of work" -yawn) and 2) Clemson going to South Carolina for the second year in a row ("committe parameters we're required to follow by the NCAA").

At the end of the show, Peterson wondered by Campbell and Ohio State didn't make the field, and McDonald though Notre Dame should have as well. I didn't hear them talk about any teams that were in that they thought should not have been.

Seems like a pretty good field. I'm happy that the Owls are going to Eugene. Hopefully it won't be too cool/damp for our guys. It'll certainly be better than going to Autzen Stadium for a dripping-wet fall football game.

Go Owls!!

RE: NCAA selection show
The biggest difference between us and San Fran is our balanced lineup. San Fran has two guys that account for around 40% of their team's RBIs...our top two guys are right at 30%. They're a bit more active on the basepaths, but nothing consequential. Slugging percentage and HRs are a toss up. We walk a lot more than they do and have about 50 more strikeouts. If we can keep Zimmer and Turner (their big hitters) from bashing us around, we should be fine.

San Fran's relief pitchers are pretty darn good. Their closer, Alex Cimber, has 6 wins alone and since a previous poster said that Hinkle was originally a reliever before moving into a starting role for a few games, it's amazing that those guys have a combined 15 wins on five starts. Their starters are pretty mediocre, but it seems like they'll either be called upon to relieve Hinkle in the first game or start, but have a very quick hook. Beyond those five pitchers, they've got two other top-notch relievers, which look like they average an inning or two per appearance. Seems imperative that we get off to a good start, because these guys just don't lose when they're up after 6 innings.
