I personally wouldn't walk on that campus without the secret service surrounding me. That part of town is what I imagine Baghdad would look like. Actually, the west side of campus is the only rough part. The south end of campus is bordered by University Oaks, which is an academic enclave and Riverside Terrace, which is literally full of mansions. The east end of campus, we are bordered by a railroad and undeveloped area. To the north of campus, we are bordered by the East End of Houston which is going through redevelopment.

Here is some of the "ghetto" you speak of:

Lots of universities have been in existence for more than 100 years. Some of the areas that border many of them are have fallen into decay. UH isn't the only university that faces this issue. I know that LSU in Baton Rouge has a very blighted area just off campus on it's north side. Renewal projects are underway in the area, mainly to provide a buffer zone between the campus and the gang wars.

Having worked very close to UH, I can say it has some sahdy areas off campus. The campus itself is very nice and has improved over the last ten years. The area around the campus is slowing improving as that part of Houston and in the general area is starting to redevelop and high end condos and business development is moving in. Once you are on the campus you don't notice the neighborhood it isin. Though the first time I went there, I thought "this is the neighborhood that borders the campus, yikes".
