RE: Wassup kiddos?
Your revelation reminds me of a story. The ship's First Mate got very drunk, and the Captain wrote that fact into the ship's log. The 1st Mate pleaded to have that detail erased, but the Captain was adamant that the log was a truthful account of each day. A day or so later, the Captain read in the log an entry by the 1st Mate - "The Captain was sober today".

Alcohol and the internet.

Not as bad as drinking and driving, but not good, either. 03-lol

I posted an off-topic thread in the off-topic forum to which I was duly directed. I was pretty proud of myself.

This was my way of announcing that I had received the message.

[continued]

But it's funny you should bring that up, because there are remarkable similarities between him and me, from what I've heard:

1. service industry - There was a thread about him not being able to afford school, and people got on to him for "not having a real job" because he worked in a restaurant.

I've been cooking food, waiting tables, and doing miscellaneous odd jobs/ manual labor for Mugshots Grill and Bar in Vestavia since a little before we opened in February 2011. I don't know if I'm a lifer yet or not, but for now it looks like I'll be there until they fire me.

I also joke about it not being a "real job" - we all do - but damn it's fun, I get 40-50 hours every week, and it pays well enough to keep my wife and me comfy for now. And working there - especially in the kitchen, getting cuts and burns, lifting heavy stuff, cleaning up unbelievably gross and smelly messes - has made me a better worker and a better person in general. That's really not an exaggeration.

2. instruments - Presumably he played saxophone. I play music too. I actually have a college degree in music, which allows me to sing very well to myself while I'm washing dishes at work lolz.

3. cars - There was a thread wherein BlazerSax was advised that if money really was an issue for him, then he should get rid of his Mustang because it was an unnecessary expense.

I too have a guilty pleasure in the form of a 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass Brougham, and it is an absolute money pit. It was free at first. My grandfather gave it to me when he passed away. But the maintenance is astronomical. I've easily spent three times as much as the car is worth to keep it in the shape it's in, which is near mint.

===================================

However, I do not smoke pot. Or cigarettes. Or do any other recreational drugs. And I despise all of them as a complete waste of time, money, and health. I drink a little. That's it.

So am I the new BlazerSax? What say you?

You sound one helluva lot more industrious than I remember Sax.

He tended to wilt when faced with adversity.

It's not a comparison I'd make.

RE: Wassup kiddos?
Anybody who says working in a restaurant is not a real job has likely never worked in one. I worked in one through almost all of my college years, and after I graduated. The hours suck, the work sucks, the general public sucks, the working environment sucks, everything about it sucks except for the money.

I've got to the point in my life where I don't see how people can mock any person for having any job. It beats the heck out of the people who sit around all day living off the government complaining that they can't catch a break.

RE: Wassup kiddos?
+1000

I love it, and yep it feels like a real job to me. When we say "real job" in jest, we tend to refer to hopefully doing something else for a living, maybe even at least tangentially related to what we studied in college. One of our former cooks has a Master's degree in something or other, and a few weeks ago he finally got his "adult job" doing some human resources something or other at a law firm.

But yeah it's real work, and there are plenty of people in the world that flat out can't do it. The turnover is ridiculous. We hire about 7 people at a time, and typically only one or two last longer than a week. It doesn't require a ton of education or anything, but it's not easy, and if you don't have a certain about of work ethic and responsibility, you won't last long.

A long time ago, I reached a personal crossroads, where I had to decide between working with the public, and hazardous materials.

The public never stood a chance.

People suck, but damn it's fun to make fun of them later.

It's very scary to have your job security partly in the hands of the general public, which is populated in small part by wackos and weirdos and people that are just mean. If you're already on a little bit of a losing streak, and then one, just one, of your customers writes a really long and angry email to the owner of the company about how rude and incompetent you are, you could lose your job.

Which is the huge advantage to working in the kitchen instead of serving or bartending: No direct contact with the customers. They can't see or hear you. Dealing with your coworkers is less risky than dealing with whoever happens to sit at your table. It could be anyone.

I don't think anyone ever said Sax didn't have a real job because he worked in a restaurant. Mind you, we all knew everything about his life because this board was his personal diary and he told us everything going on his life. If a comment was made about not having a real job, it was because he had quit a job over some perceived slight, and wanted life handed to him on a platter.

The deal with the mustang was that his parents had given to him and was paying his expenses until they got fed up and made him support himself. He cried about this injustice on this board on a regular basis. Someone suggested that he could no longer afford the mustang if his parents were paying for it and he should sacrifice it.

Sax expected mama and daddy to put up with his **** and to continue to support his drug habit even though he could drop out of school or quit a job for no good reason.

Nah they did definitely say that it wasn't a real job, because I took personal offense to it briefly before I reminded myself that it's just a message board.

There are two people for whom a job is easy - one who knows all about it and is good at doing it, and the people who know nothing about it but only see it done at a distance.
