Funny thing about scarce resources -- they have to be rationed somehow. Price is a pretty efficient way to do it.* in this case, price is EXTREMELY efficient (in the sense of approaching optimal) from our point of view, as the premium stemming from the scarcity is going to the benefit of Rice, rather than the benefit of the home team or the event promoter, or a ticket broker, or some other entity.

*Admittedly, not the only way. Some alternatives are:
- Ration by time investment -- i.e., make people queue up in a parking lot.
- Ration by some prior classification -- e.g. alumni prioritized by class year.

These might work if the tickets were non-transferable and we could make it hard for the original buyers to re-sell them to Aggies, but as a practical matter we can't. In contrast, a price premium DOES limit re-selling, which is good; and since in this case it is Rice that captures the premium, even better.

In fact, if Rice were not making any effort to capture this premium for itself, and instead letting it be captured by ticket re-sellers, I suspect that most of us would consider it a colossal blunder.

Agree with you on the economic theory.

The execution stinks of tax fraud, though -- unless ticket-buyers won't be deducting the "donation" they paid for the right to purchase the ticket.

Why? The purchase price of the ticket is the purchase price of the ticket, same as if you bought it from A&M (although to buy from A&M, I guarantee you would have to make a donation >$1000 and then you would only be able to buy for the entire season). The invitation to purchase the ticket is just one of numerous opportunities afforded to donors. The value of the invitation to buy -- like other benefits of Owl Club donations -- is not tax deductible.

The current card doesn't show the value of the benefits received. Here's an old one that does:

This site still shows Rice on the 2014 Notre Dame schedule with the game on August 30. However, Notre Dame still has nine opponents scheduled (Arizona State has been dropped) and four ACC teams to schedule, so one more game needs to go. I'm guessing one of the Owls (at Temple or our game in South Bend).

Yeah, that's what I was basing that comment on. I wouldn't be shocked if we get paid off so that they can fit their ACC games in.
That would make me very sad. That is supposed to be my daughter's first game as a Notre Dame alum.

I'm simply going on George's characterization of this as a price-premium-capturing move. If Rice is simply requiring the donation so that Rice receives true market value for the tickets, then there's no actual donation here.

This would make me very sad, too. My mom still lives in the house where I grew up, which is just north of the Notre Dame campus. I am planning to buy every ticket I can.
