Not the most compelling study but it does raise a very interesting question: As a society, how do we condemn obesity without vilifying the obese? And how can we teach our kids to tell the difference?

RE: Fat Prejudice
We can't be against anything without vilifying the people with it. It's just the way we are.

Yep.

I won't ever do anything to personally insult an individual because of their weight, but I'll be damned if I will tip toe around them in a discussion about weight and health.

My dad was in perfect health and shape in his mid 30's. He owned a gym, worked out, and participated in body-building competitions at 6'0" and 215 pounds with hardly any body fat at all. He's now 60 and well over 360 pounds. He's a farmer and commercial fisherman, on his feet constantly, and very active. I see what he eats, its not junk food and quite frankly I'm amazed that he consumes enough calories to remain as active as he is. His doctors say he is the picture of health other than the extra 180 pounds he's carrying. His brother is 3 years younger and 170 pounds soaking wet. Some people are just going to be bigger than others.

I'll teach my kids to be kind and sensitive towards people who are obese, but I will also be teaching them how to do their part to avoid getting that way.

I'm approaching my mid 30's now and I'm very aware of my weight and activity level. I went from 175 to 215 in about 4 years when I started lifting after getting married. Last summer I dropped 39 pounds with diet and cardio, then returned to 'normal' eating and very light exercise to see what would happen. I've regained 24 pounds in 9 months. Weight is a touchy subject even for me so I take a polite approach to it with others.
