Dear Streak -- On Your Birthday
Wow -- can't believe you've turned 18. It seems like yesterday when you were born in Lubbock. A lot of us never thought we'd see that day come -- and I know Old Man Gustafson was pretty surprised. Anyway, your dad always believed, and he turned us all into believers as well. I know there have been some touch and go times, like in 2000, when all the prognosticators said you wouldn't make it, but you did. This year was a little close as well, but here you are. And all the good times -- like those elementary-school years when it seemed like you were winning the big year-end Omaha trip every year. Anyway, I know it hasn't been quite as easy as you've gotten into your teenage years, but we're all still really, really proud of you. We just can't believe you're actually 18. Makes us feel old, but that's OK.

PS. You're old enough to vote, for goodness sakes!

Just think, there will be incoming freshmen next year that were born after the streak started.

Not to mention a not insignificant number of those who entered last year.

You are old enough that most that know you don't understand the phrase, "that was out of here like a Rad Weaver fastball!" Good times dear streak, good times.

Brilliant! Well done!

Great job by the team to fight through, get a little luck, and come out with another of a long string of great results.

One thing I like a lot about the streak is that we are 18 ahead of Augie.

It would take some research (calling Mike) but I wonder how this streak ranks in collegiate history in various sports.

And I hate to be anal, but the streak is 18 seasons but 17 years (1996-2003) so I'm not sure if it's eligible to vote yet or not.

OK ... I gave it one Google search ("conference championship streak"), and the top hit led to this:

http://hornets.kzoo.edu/sports/mten/2012...0423ldu2b2

.... which may or may not be the best in any sport. (They're not claiming that it is in this story ... but last year, this ESPN story said the school does say it's "the longest conference title streak for any collegiate sport at any level.") (NOTE: I haven't quoted from this story lest anyone think the incredible length of this streak is a typo. :-) )

It's pretty amazing, though. I hope we can keep ours going so our grandchildren (or for some of us, great-grandchildren) might have a chance of seeing the Owl beat it (assuming, of course, that the Hornets falter sometime soon).

This year, BTW, Cal stopped Stanford's streak of consecutive PAC-N swimming titles at 31. It had been that conference's longest conference title streak for any sport.

The NCAA says the longest conference title streak in D-III is 21 (Wartburg wrestling/Iowa Conference) ... although Kalamazoo also competes in D-III. Go figure.

There appear to be many other claims for the "longest conference championship/title streak" ... but I suspect most are either limited to a specific (but unstated) sport or conference or are just mistaken in their claim.

Well done, Mike. Now do one for streaks that span multiple conferences (nominally three).

Stanford's covered the Pac-8, Pac-10 and Pac-12 ... but you'd probably discount that because a) it's no longer active and b) the second and third conferences were additive/expansions, not composed of substantially different schools.

BTW, founded in 1888, Kalamazoo's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association claims to be the oldest collegiate athletics conference in the country.
