Owls win!

18th consecutive conference championship!! Another shutout! Does Lemond get a save?

C-USA tourney seedings? Noodle Owl's Option #1 (assuming USM beats UH; they're ahead 6-3 in T9):

Rice wins, USM wins, ECU wins: Rice #1, USM #2, ECU #3, Memphis #4, UCF #5, UH #6

(05-18-2013 08:16 AM)NoodleOwl Wrote:  It's a BEAUTIFUL day for outdoor baseball today as the Owls try for Championship #18. Win and at least a share is guaranteed, or sole possession if USM loses. Lose, and the Owls will be hoping UH can come through again over USM in order to produce a 5-WAY tie for the championship.

Seeding for next week's tournament is completely up in the air with only one seed decided as we go to the final day (Tulane, at #7). Marshall and UAB are both playing to try to continue their season as they're tied for the 8th & final spot at 6-17. UAB holds the tiebreak, so Marshall would need to beat us and have Tulane beat UAB.

So much for the bottom end of the conference. Going into today, here are the top 6 teams:
Rice 14-9
USM 14-9
Memphis 14-10 (done)
UH 13-10
ECU 13-10
UCF 13-10

Here are the tiebreak rules (for seeding purposes only): http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/c-us...eakers.pdf

Now to run through the eight scenarios for the top 6 seeds:
Rice wins, USM wins, ECU wins: Rice #1, USM #2, ECU #3, Memphis #4, UCF #5, UH #6
Rice wins, USM wins, UCF wins: Rice #1, USM #2, Memphis #3, UCF #4, UH #5, ECU #6
Rice wins, UH wins, ECU wins: Rice #1, UH #2, ECU #3, USM #4, Memphis #5, UCF #6
Rice wins, UH wins, UCF wins: Rice #1, UH #2, Memphis #3, USM #4, UCF #5, ECU #6
Rice loses, USM wins, ECU wins: USM #1, Rice #2, ECU #3, Memphis #4, UCF #5, UH #6
Rice loses, USM wins, UCF wins: USM #1, Memphis #2, UCF #3, Rice #4, UH #5, ECU #6
Rice loses, UH wins, ECU wins (5-way tie for 1st): UH #1, Rice #2, ECU #3, Memphis #4, USM #5, UCF #6
Rice loses, UH wins, UCF wins (5-way tie for 1st): Memphis #1, UCF #2, Rice #3, UH #4, USM #5, ECU #6

Bottom line for Rice - win today and we're the #1 seed. Lose, and we're anywhere from 2-4 depending on the other games.

Fantastic end of the season come back to secure first place, or at least a tie of it.

Zech gets the K for the final out.
CUSA Conference Champions.
Nice sweep.
We've won 5 in a row now. That should help our morale as we move to the CUSA tournament.
Congratulations guys

Way to Go Owls! Continuing a tradition of conference titles dating to 1996!

Now let's see if UH can give it to us outright with a 9th inning rally.

RE: Marshall @Rice Saturday, May 18 ... aka Championship Saturday!
Way to get it done, Owls! Congrats on earning our 18th consecutive conference championship...and setting the record for the most shutouts in a single season (11). We're now in sole posssession of the national lead in that category...and our shutout string is now at 26 innings and counting. 04-cheers 04-bow COGS

Another very well played, all-around game, with the only negative from this weekend being that Michael Aquino is back to his earlier in the year problem with high strikeout frequency (and, oftentimes, with guys not only in scoring position, but on 3B with less than two outs, when simply putting the ball in play would result in a run). We need Michael back to his mid-season form. Other than that, very little to complain about.

Game Ball #1: John Simms (W, 7-3, 7.0 IP, 3 singles, 0 runs, 2 BBs, 1 HBP, 4 Ks)-- pitched a very efficient game, and was really only in trouble in the 2nd inning when he loaded the bases with one out. Big Game John Simms once again lived up to his reputation. This is the 3rd consecutive year he has been the starting and winning pitcher in our final day of the season, conference championship-clinching game.

Game Ball #2: Christian Stringer (4-5, triple, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs)-- great way to celebrate Senior Day. His huge 2-run triple broke up the scoreless tie in the 5th inning, and proved to be the game-winner.

Game Ball #3: For the second day in a row, Leon Byrd (2-3, double, HBP, 2 runs scored, RBI).

Great way to end the regular season; hopefully a sign of more good things to come. Rest up...get some good practice time in...and let's get mentally ready to sweep through the tournament, which we're hosting at Reckling, beginning on Wednesday. Can't wait to get back down to The Reck. Go Owls!

Pitching Change for USM. The runner on 1st for Houston (potential game winner) is 5-5 on SB for the season, so a double likely wins it.
