He's good. Why should he get some recognition. I'm sure USM fans would love to see Ray Guy get the recognition he deserves.

Indeed. But let's not compare apples to oranges. Ray Guy is probably the best punter in the history of football.

I never said they were comparable...just that it's OK to show a punter some love.

Oh, hell yes! I saw him kick one 80+ yards in the air one Sunday, the damn ball was in the air long enough for the network to take a commercial break, come back, & the ball's still in the air. He was incredible and should have been enshrined in the Hall Of Fame. I promise you, if you polled 100 football fans and asked them if your offense was backed up near its' own end zone and needed a clutch punter to get them out of that situation, the overwhelming majority of them would choose Ray Guy.

Hell, we've had years when our punter should have been named defensive MVP.

I think there was one game in the 70's in which the Rice punter was named the offensive player of the game. Of course, he did punt dead inside the 5 four times and we won the game, so...

Until the Clemson stink wears off, it's probably a tad premature to start touting Joe Craig.

Odd. The punter is clearly a defensive position.

Well, he is on the field when our center snaps the ball. Doesn't that classify him as an offensive player?

True, but isn't his job to make it more difficult for the opposition to score.

So, if the punter is a defensive player ( who takes the snap from center, same as the QB), does that make the punt returner an offensive player? One who comes on the fiield when the other team has the ball?

Those kicking plays make it hard to define things.

Small point, but are you certain that's our media guide for the football season?

I think so. He starts the other team's possession. He's trying to advance the ball and score.

I think the confusion is in the transition from offense to defense and vise versa by each side on the play.

My $0.02, anyway. I've always thought as the placekicker as an offensive player (except when he's kicking off) and the punter as a defensive player.
