RE: Cleary fired
Hate to say it, but there are a couple of troubling signs that have come out about the search...

1. Good source (Kendall Rogers, Perfect Game) says 2 coaches have already turned UC down (ugh!),
2. Recruiting season is 100% underway...and we have no new coach.

I gotta believe (hope) that we're zeroing in on an assistant coach involved in a Super Regional and unable to announce yet. But who knows?

Unless they completely restructure their financials, there may be more turndowns in the future.

Fully supporting the scholarships will help, but there were and are more underlying issues.

Would not be surprised to see someone out of the B12. Guessing Whit had an idea of who he wanted before firing Cleary.

Current Pitching coach. Indiana has been able to get many Cincinnati kids so maybe this could help close the door on top local kids going to other programs. Not surprised current asst. coach is the guy taking into affect some comments on salaries on this board

Ty Neal Named University of Cincinnati Baseball Head Coach

CINCINNATI – Indiana University pitching coach Ty Neal, who is regarded as one of the top assistant coaches in college baseball, has been named the University of Cincinnati’s 27th baseball head coach, director of athletics Whit Babcock announced Friday.

Neal, a native of Southwest Ohio, has spent the last eight seasons at IU as the program’s top assistant and recruiting coordinator. He was previously an assistant for the Bearcats in 2004 and both played and coached at Miami (Ohio). The Hoosiers, playing at Florida State this weekend for a berth in the College World Series, are currently ranked No. 8 nationally and playing in the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time in school history.

"I’m pleased to welcome Ty, his wife Christine and their sons Silas and Beckett to the Bearcats family,” Babcock said. “Ty is a proven winner and is a perfect fit as the head baseball coach at the University of Cincinnati," Babcock said. “When we first started this search, we looked for candidates that met three criteria: a great recruiter, a track record of proven success in building a program and the right match for our institution and community. We are confident that Coach Neal is the right coach to lead our program to national prominence."

During Neal’s eight seasons with the Hoosiers, he has become known as one of the best teachers and recruiters in the game. He spent two years as the team's infield and third-base coach and oversaw all development of position players from 2009-10. In 2011, he returned to his duties as the team's pitching coach, a position he held from 2006-08. He was also IU's recruiting coordinator, and has helped recruit 16 undrafted players out of high school that turned into Major League Baseball Draft Picks from 2008-10.

During his time at IU, the Hoosiers have won a pair of Big Ten Conference Tournament titles, IU’s first regular-season conference championship since 1949 and the first outright league title in 81 years. Indiana advanced to a pair of NCAA Regionals and one NCAA Super Regional, the first in program history during Neal’s tenure. Fifteen players earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors, eight were All-America selections, eight were freshmen All-America honorees, two were named league player of the year and one earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Year accolades.

During his coaching career, Neal has mentored 18 pitchers who have been drafted in the first 10 rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft.

“I would like to thank Dr. Santa Ono and Whit Babcock for entrusting me with this opportunity," Neal said. "I am excited to be a part of the University of Cincinnati. My family and I look forward to being proud and active members of the Cincinnati community and my staff and I will work hard to give Bearcats fans a baseball team they can cheer on for years to come."

Neal joined the Hoosiers after serving as the pitching coach under IU head coach Tracy Smith at Miami in 2005. That season, Neal guided Miami's staff to a 3.33 ERA, the 16th-best mark in the nation, as the team earned a trip to the NCAA Tournament and matched a school record with 45 victories (45-18 overall). Prior to his stint at UC in 2004, Neal coached at Southern Illinois from 2001-03 and started his coaching career at Miami in 2000, when the RedHawks went 40-23 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

Neal wrapped up his playing career at Miami as a four-year letterwinner, earning 19 career victories. As a senior, he served as a team captain and was presented with the RedHawk Award. He was also named an All-American by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Neal, a native of West Elkton, Ohio, graduated from Miami in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in health and sport studies. He and his wife, Christine, have two sons, Silas and Beckett.

Wasn't a name I had heard up to this point. I have heard great things about the guy though. Has local ties, great record of developing pitchers. Excited to see what he can do here.

I will make the decision later but as long as the coach is held accountable this looks like a hire that could get old season ticket holders like myself back down to the park.

Any body remember that Indiana canceled a regular season matchup the year we won 39 games? Indiana was terrible and essentially caused UC to not attain that magical number of 40 wins which usually gets you into the tournament. They did this without notice so UC could not schedule another opponent. hey called the morning of the game. UC used to play Indiana often in OOC midweek games. Since that shafting they have not played and I know, at least from the UC side, there was a great deal of bad blood. Just curious if this came up in the interview.

Not quite yet. He still has games to coach for IU for at least a couple more days.

I know...I know. But it is indeed...big time recruiting season. About 1-2 weeks into the hottest times. He can parlay IU's success into some good stuff, but hopefully he's on email already making those contacts.

RE: Cleary fired
The good thing is that we don't have a lot of spots to fill. We only had 3 seniors and were 4 under the roster limit this year. We have 4 commitments already and hopefully they stay committed. Williams, Glass, and McElroy are the only guys with a shot of leaving early. Of those 3, Glass is probably gone no matter what. McElroy came back after being a very late pick last year and his stock fell, so he likely comes back again. Williams is probably a coin flip. Even if all 3 go and you add Evan Hills who has announced he will not return to the team so he can focus on academics, and there are only 10 roster spots to fill this year. If our 4 commitments hold, then there are just 6 spots.

Coach Neal is walking into a pretty good situation as far as the roster is concerned. This year's team was very talented, just very young. Cleary left a very solid core of players who gained a lot of experience this season.

If they canceled the game that quickly, wouldn't it have been considered a forfeit (and therefore a UC win)?

The Hoosiers just beat Florida State in the first game of the Super Regionals in Tallahassee. VERY difficult to do there. FSU torched Stanford and this year's #1 draft pick Mark Appel there last year.

Good pitch calling at the end of the game by Coach Neal I assume.

There was a small chance of rain...They sucked and season was winding down. They called and said they weren't showing. Apparently no forfeits in NCAA baseball.

Wow. If a school like IU had pulled a stunt like this in football or basketball, I would think everyone would freak and the NCAA would have a fit. Sadly, shenanigans like this makes it hard for potential fans to take college baseball very seriously.
