I figured these 2 would find a way to keep playing. Good for you!

Guess they didn't get the "Don't schedule the Irish" memo

They did. I think that the Spartans just told Brady Hoke, David Brandon, the rest of the Wolverines and the rest of the Big Ten to shove it.

Why would ND want to play Michigan State instead of Michigan??? Michigan would seem like a bigger game/rivalry. Maybe Brady Hoke was right.

Go read what I wrote about Michigan and ND in the other thread. ND/Michigan State has always been a bigger deal and a longer series/rivalry to ND than the tortured ND/Michigan "relationship".

BTW, Michigan State has beaten Michigan four of their last five meetings. Look at the records the past five years or so. State is right there with the Skunkbears.

Not surprised by this at all. State is the most important Big Ten opponent to ND. State played them when no other major midwestern school really would. I get that.

Yeah, that's what this means! Michigan State is telling the Big Ten to shove it!

Seriously Terry...you have lost your mind due to realignment. You fit in well with the ACC folks.

ND schedule most years:

5 ACC games (rotating)
2 Pac12 teams (USC, Stanford)
1 Independent (Navy)
1 B1G (MSU)
3 (wild cards)

looks like ND has moved to a 9 game schedule?

Thanks, He1nous, I appreciate that. I really mean it. I take your comment as a badge of honor from a Big Ten fan.

It would make sense to play Purdue in the 2 off years of the MSU series. One B10 team per year.

4 years MSU
2 years Purdue

RE: ND/Michigan State series to continue; 4 on, 2 off through 2032
TerryD - To be sure, the Domers that I know definitely all consider Michigan to be a bigger game than Michigan State and it inflames the most passion other than USC, although they simultaneously pass it off as "not a big deal that the series is ending and we'll find other marquee opponents".

My Michigan alum friends all consider Notre Dame to be a bigger game than Michigan State and it inflames the most passion other than Ohio State, although they simultaneously pass it off as "not a big deal that the series is ending and we'll find other marquee opponents".

The upshot: Notre Dame and Michigan are unequivocally the two most stubborn and pride-bound athletic departments in the country. That's not a critique - they are the 2 athletic departments that can afford to be that way. However, as an outsider that sees both groups quite a bit directly, it's all pure denial. Both teams can schedule other marquee teams all day as replacements, but none will engender as much as hatred as Michigan and Notre Dame have for each other in the non-conference context. It's a shame that the two schools can't get over themselves since it's a fantastic series for college football that should be played (and believe me, I'm neither a Domer or Wolverine in the slightest).

Just to clarify and add some context.... "tortured" = 38-0 (Michigan over ND, 2003, 2007).04-chairshot

I say this as a reminder that we are talking football here. This isn't exactly the Cuban missile crisis that some historians would like to make it out to be.

RE: ND/Michigan State series to continue; 4 on, 2 off through 2032
Further to my last post, I'm very sure that Notre Dame has a better relationship with Michigan State and Purdue than it does with Michigan. However, it's a bit disingenuous to state that beating MSU and Purdue mean more to ND fans than beating Michigan. The cold relationship needs to be differentiated from the heat of the rivalry (and the latter is definitely there with ND and Michigan in a way that it isn't there with the vast majority of college football series that have been played more frequently, so it's too bad that both schools are throwing it away).

RE: ND/Michigan State series to continue; 4 on, 2 off through 2032
Notre Dame has played Michigan State twice as many times as Michigan and I think ND owes Michigan State because they were willing to play them when several Big Ten schools like Michigan were not. I think this makes perfect sense.
