Cincinnati running back Jameel Poteat transfers to Stony Brook

Stony Brook recruits from Long Island For the second straight season, Stony Brook football coach Chuck Priore has landed a major transfer running back from a Football Bowl Subdivision school. The Seawolves yesterday announced that Jameel Poteat, who has two years of eligibility, will leave Cincinnati to join SBU for summer workouts.

"Jameel is a very talented player who will have an immediate impact on our team," Priore said in a statement. "He possesses a great combination of speed and toughness and comes from a great high school in Pennsylvania."

Poteat appeared in 21 games for the Bearcats over the past two seasons, but was used sparingly in the backfield, rushing for just 119 yards as a sophomore last season. However, he came out of Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, Pa., as a consensus four-star recruit and top-100 player, recruited by USC, Notre Dame, Florida, Pitt and West Virginia.

The 5-10, 207-pound back totaled 4,832 rushing yards in high school and 84 career touchdowns, including a senior season in which he carried for 1,724 yards and 31 TDs. Poteat becomes a top candidate to be Stony Brook's No. 2 running back behind Marcus Coker, who transferred from Iowa last season after finishing second in Big Ten rushing as a sophomore. Poteat will compete with junior transfer James Kenner and sophomore Jamie Williams for the key backup role to Coker.

Ouch, hope it works for him, but to transfer in and compete for the backup role has to sting a little.

RE: Cincinnati running back Jameel Poteat transfers to Stony Brook
Poteat was UC’s highest rated recruit 2 years ago and now he’s transferring to a school called Stony Brook? He was a 4-star guy. Couldn’t he at least landed at a Toledo or Ohio or Miami (OH) type school??

He transfers to a school to compete for the #2 running back??

How is a school called Stony Brook landing a 4-star recruit like Poteat and the Big Ten’s #2 rusher??

What is a Seawolve??

Stony Brook students probably get asked what a Seawolve is as often as I get asked what a Bearcat is

Stony Brook is actually one of the better programs currently in the FCS. They have won at least a share of their conference every year since 2009 and have been in the FCS playoffs during that stretch. They were 10-3 last year. Their roster comprises of a lot of transfers from the FBS level. When we play them in 2014 I expect they will be a lot tougher than the FCS dregs we have played for a number of years.

Now is makes sense. He wants a shot at the Bearcats to show what we lost.

Rockets still have David Fluellen returning at RB. Flu was leading the nation in Rushing until he was injured late in the season. Fluellen had 161yds(7.32 ypa) against the Bearcats, about 20 less than season high Savon Huggins', but in 21 carries vs 40+. Toledo is usually solid at the RB position. The Rockets' lone 2013 RB commit was Kareem Hunt.
