Is the Sun Bowl in play for the MW?
With the ACC lining up their higher picks to eastern bowls, that'll leave out the Sun starting in 2014.
Can the MW make a play with the PAC for the Sun Bowl? With the playoff taking place, the mid-tier bowls are less significant and perhaps gives the MW a chance to see if it can get a tie for the Sun.

sun bowl traditionally wants at least 1
team from eastern or central timezone

but the mtn. has a good lineup

take your best shot
and see what they say

RE: Is the Sun Bowl in play for the MW?
Living in El Paso and having attended each game since I was 9 I can say ...no way. Sun Bowl committee (I have had lunches with) is very very proud of its partnership with CBS. CBS wants big names and big conferences. It would rather have Big12's 8th place team over MWC 1st. The only remote shot MWC has of getting the Sun Bowl would be to invite UTEP (they would listen this time) and even then, the pressure would have to come from El Pasoans.

My guess is the Sun Bowl becomes a Big 12 & Pac 12 Bowl or Pac 12 & Army/Navy bowl because of the enormous amount of Military here. The last non auto school to come was TCU when it was in the WAC and only because of the support from UTEP. Wyoming was passed over because "it was in the MWC and there was no way it would be invited over a UTEP conference mate." Direct from the Executive Director himself.

Good info on the Sun Bowl and you are probably right about preferring a borderline bottom feeder from a big 5 conference over a top team in the MWC. And I have long agreed that UTEP needs to become a member of the MWC but unless we expand to add BYU that probably won't happen anytime soon.

But about the Sun Bowl: That bowl has been steadily dropping in both TV ratings and viewership and that has be some real concern to CBS.
2012: 2.7 (4.0M)
2011: 2.7 (4.1M)
2010: 3.0 (4.6M)
2009: 3.3 (5.0M)

In two of the past three years (2012, 2010) the Las Vegas Bowl has outperformed the Sun Bowl in both ratings and TV viewers against a lower ranked PAC12 team. That both the AAC and the PAC12 are threatening to further downgrade to lower ranked team could be an opportunity for the MWC to get into the ring.

Yes sir, and you would think that has to concern the officials. Today's average fan automatically searches the ESPN networks for bowls and what's ironic is CBS is a second thought. Lets say a average joe lets say a Kansas fan is looking for a bowl to watch. First thought will be, lets see whats on ESPN. He would go through ESPN 1,2,3 before even seeing what is on CBS. I really think that is the problem here. We have had good household name the last couple of years, Miami, Notre Dame, USC, Georgia Tech. So let's see where this goes. Will be interesting
