He used three factors:
1) end of last year ranking
2) number of returning starters
3) quality of recruiting class.

USM @ #80 - not bad esp after a horrible 2012.

I'll take it. Its very positive for us. Hopefully it will play out that way - not holding my breath though.

Tulane is at #73. That's a little too high in my opinion - but then again the recruiting class has been very good.

It's hard to use the recruiting class rankings just because you never know how many of each teams recruits will actually make it to campus and how many will even be able to contribute right away if at all. I do think you need to factor it in, but I would think an average of maybe the last 3 recruiting classes would give you a better idea than just the most recent class.

GaSt top 126, Tulane 73, Maryland 50. Even Vanderbilt at 19 seems a stretch.

UTSA comes in at 74.

While I don't mind the ranking, something seems off.

Yes...that's #111...

Marshall comes in at 55. And only 1 school on our schedule is ahead of us in VA Tech at 32. If our D- is even half way fixed I think we can be 3-0 going into Blacksburg. And for the 1st time we have ever played VA Tech I think we can leave Lane Stadium with a win.

It's a meaningless poll but we're not FBS until 2014. FCS indy this year.

The only preseason football ranking worth the effort to read it is Pre Snap Read by Paul Myerberg. While I think we are gonna regress a bit from last year, Tech at 125 is a joke.

I think our subs would finish above 125.

Well when 1/3 of the rank is given to number (not quality) of returning starters then you can dismiss the poll. ODU has 16 returning starters and that ranks us at 35, which would make Old Dominion the third best team in the SEC. Actually, maybe they have something there...

This poll is invalid, the Great App St wasn't listed. If they had been they would have been top 25.
