Whatever they call it, it lead to a run!

2 on 1 out B7. Byrd up.
We need to play add-on!
JP points out the 1-0 lead is the Owls first lead of the series. Ouch!

Does Stringer's advance make Rat's fly out a sac fly?
Apparently not per the gametracker box score.
I didn't hear the play, and I'm not sure JP's description would have been any more insightful than the gametracker graphic, but it looked like a sac fly on my screen!
JP was surprised by Stringer's aggresiveness, and refered to the advance on a fly to left center as unusual. My impression is that Rat's intent was to get a hit, and Stringer took advantage of the situation - maybe the outfielder was moving away or he just caught them making the assumption that he would not try to advance. Does intent factor into the scoring?
I can't believe it would on a sac fly.

A batter is only given a sac fly when a runner scores as a direct result of a caught fly ball. In other words, a sac fly is always an RBI.

2 out single by Memphis in T9, but Zech closes it out with a 4-3. Owls win!

Well we salvage one game. Hopefully we aren't going to have win every meaningful game here on out with a shutout.

You are correct! I had forgotten that point.
I guess that just makes it a productive AB.

Thanks.
Can't blame the pitching the past two days-- Stephens, Simms and Lemond (twice) were outstanding.

Side note on the sacrifice fly..has been on and off in the major leagues and was originally granted on this type of play...later the sacrifice fly rule was discontinued and then reinstated in the major leagues.

Rice drew five walks all weekend. Four on Fri, one on Sat, zero on Sun. That was not because our hitters were swinging at bad pitches. The Memphis pitchers had great control.

Yes and no. They didn't walk many batters, but that was at least partly due to the penchant of our batters to constantly swing at the first or second pitch thrown to them. We showed absolutely no patience this weekend. As bad as our offense was all weekend long, we didn't even try to make the opposing pitchers work for their outs.

I only went to the last two games but I did not get the impression that walks were there to be had or that taking more pitches would have resulted in more walks. I saw very good control except for a couple of at bats (literally two). I think Ewing walked on 4 pitches once. You have to swing if you are not to be called out on strikes. Good Memphis pitching, even the slow boat to China who pitched on Sunday and looked oh so hittable.

The old scoreboard at the Astrodome had a good cartoon with a fly being sacrified in a cooking pot of boiling water like the missionaries were sopposedly sacrified by the natives.
