Disappointed to see that NIU's current Media Relations outfit didn't do anything on this guy, but that's par for the course now days. This human touch is what has been missing from Huskie athletics ever since Korcek left, no one in this administration gives a damn about anybody that was a part of athletics prior to their arrival, be they athlete, coach, supporter, etc.
Rick Calderon was one of those devoted behind-the-scenes Huskies who people probably didn't know by name, but saw him and maybe wondered who the long-haired dude was. Read the obit in the Daily Chronicle and the part where Novak credits Rick with being part of NIU's title win in 2005. Ran into one person at the grocery store and another at a gas station who both told me Novak flew back to DeKalb to attend the services....that's what made me go look again at the Chronicle obits which made me sorry I didn't notice the day before. Then again, the Chroincle sports staff should have run something on Calderon. It's another example of what a class act Novak is, making a trip from North Carolina back here to pay his respects.

RE: Rick Calderon
It is amazing how quickly institutional history is lost in a couple of years. With new ADs, new coaches and new staff in transition, you have people who have no clue who Rick was. The new staff should ask themselves: “What would Joe Novak do?” Then a new staffer would ask: “Joe who?”

Rick, thank you for making NIU a better place. RIP.

Wow RIP Rick. I'm seriously really bummed to hear about this. I had no idea he was sick let alone had passed away. Spent a lot of time with him on road trips when I worked for the football team years back. Really an awesome guy. Sad sad news...

This was all that I saw last week.

RE: Rick Calderon
On the Huskie blog there is a statement regarding Rick. Was posted yesterday. Maybe they read this forum.
