New Conference?
With Mercer and ETSU about to leave for the Southern Conference, anybody heard about Lipscomb's stance? I would love to get into the Big South as a non-football member.

Also, any news on the basketball coach search?

RE: New Conference?
Haven't heard anything on the conference shifting front.

I have some guesses, but they'd be just that.

The Nashville City Paper reported last night that current interim head coach Pete Froedden has been interviewed for the coaching job, as has former Lipscomb player and current LSU DBO Tom Kelsey.

Again, I have some guesses on where they might go (and where they'll probably not go), but the folks making the decision are holding their cards pretty close to the vest.

Good info, thanks. Like usual with Lipscomb, we'll find out when they are ready to let people know.

RE: New Conference?
A couple of other tidbits on the Lipscomb coaching search:

The only former Lipscomb player with college head coaching experience (on the men's side) is Jason Shelton. He played and coached under Don Meyer, was an assistant at Colorado under Ricardo Patton (who has Nashville ties) and at Utah under Rick Majerus. He is currently the head coach at Freed-Hardeman.

ETA: Correction -- Strike "only" from paragraph above. Tom Kelsey has been a college head coach at two different NAIA schools.

If I'm guessing, I'd say it's probably either Shelton, Tom Kelsey, or Brian Ayers. At this point I'd make Kelsey a slight favorite. But until there is white smoke from the conclave, nobody knows anything for sure.

RE: New Conference?
Looks like we got our coach. I'm fairly pleased and hope he works out. I know Belmont fans are scratching their heads!

Well, Elon is moving to the CAA, and VMI is moving back to the Southern. The Southern may have to raid another Big South team, too. Right now, I think Lipscomb is a Big South caliber member who could dabble into non-scholarship football in the future. With the very good high school field, it would not take much to get the program off the ground.

RE: New Conference?
Lipscomb won't play football until Belmont builds a stadium for us.

Lipscomb tried to join the Big South back in the day, but for one reason or another wasn't a match. My guess -- and we've seen how well those have worked out so far -- is that Lipscomb stays put, at least until a spot opens in the OVC. That can come from TSU going to the SWAC, or Belmont going to the A-10, or SIU-E going to the Missouri Valley.

But that's just a guess.

All you need to do to get a new conference is to add non-schloarship football and for a team to leave OVC, you got your conference.
