The SEC just went super nova.
Yes, but remember, the SECN is separate from the contracts ESPN and CBS already signed with the SEC in 2008.
Good move by the SEC getting equity in the SECN, though. They learned from that 2008 mistake.

It is absolutely shocking to me they didn't get equity in this deal, at least according to the article,

You're kidding, right? Industry experts are predicting the SEC will eventually collect $28.6m per school for the SECN and the rest of the ESPN/CBS deals. That is far less than the SEC could have gotten had it not signed the awful 2008 deals.

"Industry experts are predicting" Really? I thought it was a CBS article. Other articles are speculating $35 million. Some go as high as $70 million. It's is all speculation now.
You found a low number, and for some reason, grabbed it, held it up in the air and shouted "This is it, this is it! The SEC is a bunch of morons!!" Why? I do not know, but at some point you must admit you were wrong or you are going to appear delusional.

B1G states population ranking #5 Illinois, #6 Pennsylvania, #7 Ohio, #9 Michigan, #11 New Jersey, #16 Indiana, #19 Maryland, #20 Wisconsin, #21 Minnesota, #30 Iowa, #37 Nebraska... estimate of 84.1 million
SEC states population ranking #2 Texas, #4 Florida, #8 Georgia, #17 Tennessee, #18 Missouri, #23 Alabama, #24 South Carolina, #25 Louisiana, #26 Kentucky, #31 Mississippi, #32 Arkansas... estimate of 90 million
Those are for the whole state. Of the B1G states I would say that Indiana is the only one who isn't the top school in the state because of Notre Dame.

I think the writers point was pro teams are bigger in most of the B1G states.

Clay Travis is an SEC honk with delusions of grandeur. Notice how he still is pushing his hair-brained theory about the SEC pushing into NC and VA? That dream is dead.
The SEC Network getting $3/subscriber? Get real. The BTN only gets about $0.90/subscriber within its footprint. What makes Travis believe the SEC will get 3-4 times that?

WTF? You latched on to one SBJ source saying that the SEC and ESPN are splitting profits from the SECN and held it up in the air and shouted "This is it! This is it! ...". Etc. Good Lord.
Feel free to post links to articles predicting $70 million, etc. I'll be happy to peruse them. In any event, the number will be a lot less than what the SEC would have gotten sans the 2008 disaster deal.

Those are for the whole state. Of the B1G states I would say that Indiana is the only one who isn't the top school in the state because of Notre Dame.
Remember that the state of Indiana is a bit different in the same way as Kentucky and North Carolina - it is unambiguously a basketball state and, in that respect, the Hoosiers are clearly the most popular team. Notre Dame seems to have a similar relationship with Indiana natives as Duke has with North Carolina natives - it's not really a "local" team. ND is a bigger draw across state lines in the Chicago area.
The overarching point is that both the Big Ten and SEC really do "deliver" all of their home markets with respect to college sports even if there might be other high profile schools that compete for attention in the footprint (e.g. Notre Dame in the Big Ten, Texas in the SEC). I've always thought that the "pro sports competition" argument was weak because any market that's worth actually having from a TV perspective is going to have a lot of pro sports competition.

It's the nature of the football culture that matters. E.g., in places like Texas and Louisiana, it's a shared culture. The old mantra in a place like Louisiana is "Destehan High School on Fridays, LSU on Saturdays, the Saints on Sundays". That's a shared football culture. Rabid following of the NFL team does nothing to diminish the appeal of college (and high school) football. In fact, those three foci create a general football frenzy in the fall especially but also year-round that benefits interest in all three levels of play.
But in places like NYC or Boston, it's "nothing on Fridays and Saturdays, and the Patriots/Giants/Jets on Sundays". For a school like UConn, that's a very tough nut to crack.
Even worse is a place like Tampa, where the culture is "Plant High on Fridays, Florida or FSU on Saturdays, the Bucs on Sundays". You see where USF fits in to that.
