RE: IT IS NOW OFFICIAL
How much cash did the name represent, though? We only have the final deal to go by, with no points of reference the amount of money the AAC got to balance letting the name go is unknown. If the AAC was faking and didn't want it, it's possible it represented little to no money, or maybe it was a huge fight and cost tens of millions with Fox demanding they keep it. Who knows, we certainly don't. Though, my guess is that leaving immediately is what skewed the money numbers the most. The AAC schools knew the difference between the Fox deal and the ESPN deal. Your schools could have squeezed us for that one year's difference of money since Fox wanted to get the deal done.
If the basketball schools were only going to get 30 million in value if they stayed to 2015, left the name behind, and gave up MSG, then then this deal was about about 20 million of worth to the FBS side. ...doesn't look as good. If the basketball side could have claimed everything but 10 million by waiting for 2015, well then, the AAC made a killing in the deal. Numbers looks great, but it means jack for what any of the deals pieces were worth until someone comes out and explains finer points of the deal.

The NCAA Division I Board noted that the current Big East Conference would become the American Athletic Conference ("The American") on July 1, 2013, clearing the way for the new conference to adopt the Big East name. The American will retain the Big East's permanent seat on the Division I Board of Directors and their three votes.

This is a coupe for the AAC!
In the interest of fairness, the nBEshould retain this seat. The AAC is a new conf. Contrary to how it went down, the nBE is the original conf.
The NBE does not have football; they do not count. Hell, Pitt shouldn't count.

The current all-sport Big East is changing its name to the American Athletic Conference, clearing the way for the NEW non-football conference to be named the Big East. The American or AAC is the same conference as the Big East currently is, it will maintain the charter, constitution, office, staff, voting and recognition with the NCAA. I can't at all conceive how you can say the AAC is the new conference.
The NEW non-football Big East is being formed and will officially begin/be recognized on August 1st, according to the NCAA. The C7 left tens of millions behind by giving up any claims to credits or exit fee payments by outgoing football schools in trade for the Big East name to use on their NEW conference. The new Big East will get mid-major basketball voting rights, just 1.14 votes in the NCAA; compared to 3 votes that major conferences get (including the AAC).

IceJus10: Votes have nothing to do with being major or mid-major. Many conferences with 3 votes and a seat are considered mid majors, because it is determined solely by sponsoring FBS. It was a ploy some years ago for the power conference to get more power in DI, give votes to FBS conferences. Sounds like this could be changing again, so who knows what's next.
You're talking 100% correct on the business side of the AAC and Big East conferences. AAC old and Big East new, but history, etc. is transferable property. We know that the Big East is the continuing conference in basketball, it was already pointed out by a university president that part of the separation agreement was keeping that aspect with the name. ...it'll be curious to see where the rest of the records go, especially football. Neither side is a full continuation of the 1979 Big East, but both are a partial continuations. We can all argue until our fingers fall off, but nobody will successfully argue their side is the continuation.
