Not exactly "world famous" but I'm sure there is some recognition among certain groups.

Same experiment here and it yielded the same results. I even asked one who is from another country and she gave me an odd look and said "No".

Growing and working in my family business that is near the Huff Rd and Howell Mill Rd intersection and moved out of Atlanta in 2010, I am very familiar with Atlanta. I still travel to Atlanta a good bit for both business and pleasure. I do tend to get a chuckle when I hear things like "this neighborhood is great" or "everyone knows about this place". Very myopic view IMO.

No doubt, Little 5 Points is unique and I do enjoy grabbing dinner in that area from time to time, but to call it "World Famous" is a stretch.... a big stretch. Sure, it might be a highlight in Frommer's Travel Guide for Atlanta.

I'd be interested in seeing what some of the SBC fans have to say on the subject.

Why? To take a thread jack to the nth degree?

I am also betting that the "world travelers" in your survey couldnt name two neighborhoods in Chicago, NYC, Miami or San Francisco. After the Olympics Atlanta became an international tourist destination. People started writing newspaper and magazine articles about the city. People started visiting and once they are done with the MLK and Cater Centers, CNN and Centennial Olympic Park they usually want to know where there are bars an restaurants and most ask about 1) Buckhead and 2) Little Five Points. The neighborhood most certainly has changed in the last 10 years to the point that most local intowners avoid it on weekends because its overrun by tourists. Most people when they travel do some research to figure out where to go and hang out. And I know that Little Five has appeared in numerous national articles over the last 10 years. Not sure how once again any innocuous comment becomes yet another instance of "Oh no you didnt! That aint true!". Sorry, but about the 10th time you're in a bar and some guy with a NY/English/ Spanish/ accent asks you how to get to place A you kind of get the drift that people have heard of place A.

Challenge accepted and guess what... Everyone questioned named 3 or more neighborhoods in NYC, all but 1 named at least 2 in Miami, all named multiple neighborhoods in Chicago. San Fran was the one with some problems.

Clearly the same stigma attached to those foreigners asking how to get to Capitol Hill, East Village, Beverly Hills, etc.

The Presidio, Chinatatown, Tenderloin. I could name about 6 neighborhoods in San Fran over 1 in Atlanta.

You guys win. To summarize in 2013.

Atlanta sucks.

Atlanta is too black, too gay and too ghetto

Downtown and GSU are a war zone.

And now much to the chagrin of the Atlanta Convention and Visitor's Bureau, we have no tourists.

Thanks guys. Not sure what we would do 'round here without some Statesboro lurnin.

Ummm.... switching to decaf on the weekends could help out.

So when you disagree with people about Atlanta, you call them racist bigots?

No sure where anyone said such a thing.

First time I've ever been called a racist. I named the Tenderloin district, which would put any of the fake thug Atlanta projects to shame.

Didn't you know? That's the standard response for GA State when they no longer have the ability to come up with reasonable responses to defend their point of view. You'd think they know us better than that by now... we're not racist, we "hate" everyone equally!
