RE: SoCon News
They'll be worse than WKU was during their move up. Appalachian may lose to Western. No joke

RE: SoCon News
In reconsidering reality, I say the SoCon should go and get Kennesaw State and Coastal Carolina. Believe ETSU would sponsor Kennesaw. Eleven football schools and twelve basketball schools. It's Atlanta and Myrtle Beach, some decent travel destinations.

RE: SoCon News
'66 - We had a pretty big discussion some time ago about Coastal. Furman & Wofford are especially against that. I'm in agreement with you, however, and I think that they would be a great fit. From what I've heard, which has been awhile and I'm not sure it's relevant now, is that there is interest in Kennesaw from the SoCon, but not Coastal. But, as we all know, that could have changed by now since that interest can change by the day.

Most SoCon schools are against Kennesaw State because they think their time in FCS may be brief.

Not to mention their problems with athletics. 0 winning seasons in basketball with none on the horizon, and football is a complete unknown. It's a harsh reality, but I would wager that the SoCon is playing "wait and see" on KSU. If they become competitive, the SoCon can always pick them up. No reason to take a chance on them now.
The A-Sun desperately needed KSU to stay. It worked out great for the A-Sun, and no telling what went on behind the scenes.

Their enrollment nears that of UT-K and they average about 1200 basketball fans per game. Folks like to point out that they are in the Atlanta market, but fail to realize that they have no visibility in that market.
They have a long way to go in attendance growth to get to BCS.

They are definitely not going BCS...but you could see them in FBS...sadly, a number of examples can be shown that prove that big enrollments in big markets (visibility or not) trump quality football programs (see: FIU, FAU, GASt...and the way things have gone so far, add UNCC to the list).
This isn't just conjecture on my part, but actual statement from more than one school official.
KSU surprises me, they were a terror in multiple sports while DII (winning national titles in 3-4 different sports), but almost none of that has transferred to DI. Nice facilities, decent budget...not much success.

RE: SoCon News
You have to remember Charlotte started from scratch with football and I don't think they had ever fielded one, neither had the others you mentioned. If you look at FAU/FIU, both now have outstanding facilities to play in, FIU had gone to a bowl a couple of years in a row until their A.D. had a colossal brainfart and fired Mario Cristobal.
Kennesaw I'm sure has visions of FBS, but Vaughn Williams has a TON of work to do to get their house in order for that. They're atleast 10 years away from a move up, or being ready for one. Kennesaw would've been a nice add for the SoCon, guaranteed wins in MBB for a few years, trip to Marietta, etc... Oh well.
I find the whole ETSU/Kennesaw football game borderline ironic. When ETSU joined the A-Sun and they moved up, the previous regime tried to sell us on the Owls being a rival. Hell, we even tried on here to pump it up with some talk between fans, but the highlights were I believe one KSU win our first year in the A-Sun and the Rhoda/Sneed/Wooten skirmish in the dome. I am somewhat surprised KSU didn't join the Big South for all sports, perhaps that happens one day.

RE: SoCon News
Not really trying to start a debate. I am just saying what I heard directly from a person in the department here...who also confirmed that there were other school AD's that thought the same thing. Doesn't mean they are right or wrong (or that there was another reason and they just used FBS aspirations as an excuse), but just what their thought/decision process was on the matter.

RE: SoCon News
I'm not either, I just don't get why these folks all kept thinking that KSU is going to magically be better or appealing to a C-USA or Sun Belt in their current state.
Atleast for me, I'll always look forward to spanking that Chattanooga arse on the field, court, or whatever. Next year will be fun, home and home, a rivalry renewed in basketball. I just wish ETSU could hold off in football until about 2017 so they'll atleast have a stable roster and a chance to hang another 63 on the Mocs. :-)

I understand what you are saying, I know their stated dreams, but I doubt they are going anywhere except perhaps the Big South with a fan base of 1200.
