JMU being good at basketball is a myth. I'm not sure why everyone believes it.
Their average RPI over the last 10 seasons is 231. They have finished inside the top 100 of the RPI only once in that time (In 2011 they had an RPI of 90). At this time they will not help the league in basketball.
James Madison RPI by year:
2013 - 182
2012 - 261
2011 - 90
2010 - 241
2009 - 122
2008 - 218
2007 - 300
2006 - 299
2005 - 305
2004 - 289
Said they would help a little in basketball, never said they were good. They would bring more basketball presence to the NE for the Sun Belt which should help bb recruiting a little.
I don't necessarily buy this. No way to know I suppose. But has being there helped them? Legitimate question. I see high RPI history and it scares me. I understand down years, but I pulled a decade's worth or RPI! Btw, I'm not opposed to JMU at all. I just keep seeing how people say they will help our basketball and I have to question it!!
Think of who JMU has had to battle the last several years in basketball. ODU, George Washington, George Mason, all those A-10 members, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Villanova, UMass, Temple, those Big East basketball teams, all those really good Virginia basketball teams that have gone to the final 4 or 8 the last several years. Basketball is huge in the NE, compared to most of the rest of the country. It like looking at FCS and compare it to FBS with not taking that into consideration. I'm not a huge basketball fan like I used to be but would think JMU would normally be in the top two or three Sun Belt teams if they were in the SB the next few years. Would be an advantage when a SB school is recruiting some player from the NE. And hate to admit it but the NE concentrates on those city basketball courts and produces some good players.

RE: Who would YOU pick as the 12th football member
That goes back to my last point though. If it's hard for JMU to compete with ODU, George Washington, George Mason, the A10, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Villanova, UMASS, Temple, and the Big East teams, how are we supposed to compete for those recruits? And how does them coming to the Sun Belt help them?
I'm not being a jerk, I just see the other side!

You have a very valid point there. Cannot even contest that.

Why wouldn't you include Liberty in the poll? They seem to at least been vetted legitimately as a candidate unlike Chattanooga and The Citadel.

Still thinking about it. Guess only advantage would be some easy wins for JMU, and with more wins could hopefully recruit better players going forward.
Pretty lame, but best I could think of.
Football though would be great for them except for travel.

I certainly don't feel this way. As a whole, we want it to start back up also... Troy has always been our only true rivalry... not having one really sux.

I did include them:
I'm in the East: Other
I'm in the West: Other
But the Liberty talk was mostly fan driven. I don't think they are a good fit and our presidents have never motioned to even discuss them as a potential member as far as we have been told. For that reason (and to keep the thread from getting quickly derailed) I left it open ended by including an "other" option.

I'm all in for you guys moving up. We'll have to up our game in recruiting when you move up, but I want a rival enough to man up in recruiting. As with South, we understand the implications of having more FBS teams in state.

Why not North Dakota State? Two time FCS champ, closer than Idaho, probably as good or better than Idaho.

I'd say Idaho is a short term solution. Adding North Dakota State to the Sun Belt would change that.

Who else you going to add?
James Madison and Mo State may decline and Liberty was bashed by everybody on this board despite having the next best facilities and their own TV network.
North Dakota State too far..
Why not The Citadel?
I'd rather take Liberty than Jax State, Chatty, Lamar, etc..
Reminds me of Goldilocks... This one's too hot, this one's too cold, this one's just right, but they don't want to join..

If they aren't consistently absolutely top notch in the top sport, facilities and TV networks mean nothing, at least to me as a fan. Obviously, conferences care about money and conference publicity. I can't see how Liberty's TV network and Facilities will help Troy (or the SBC) in the long run. Sure, we'll get a little more exposure, but who watches the Liberty Network other than Liberty fans? And if we add teams that aren't going to blow the doors off in FBS football, what good is the increased exposure?
Some want an enhanced basketball league, and that's where their priorities lie. I respect that, but that's not me.

Then YOU take Liberty.I will bet you though that your President will not vote yes for them.
Meanwhile,we'll take MO State

A military school with 3500 students and a $12M budget that has never said the word FBS ever. Hell, not even FloridaJag has mentioned them. Ridiculous.
