I did get to watch one Marshall sporting event while in Louisiana. Marshall played in the Cajun Dome in 1995. I stuckout like a sore thumb. I was the only one dressed in Green and White. The whole bench seen me though.

I'll miss memphis state but I'm thrilled about playing with ODU UNCC and WKU again. The only drawback is UAB will be in the west

I don't think he is disrespecting somebody. VT used to be nothing but a dry straw during the pre Beamer era and I doubt anybody will credit a win against them back then better than a win against them in the current form. Their program grew to new levels during Beamer and of course as the circle tend to complete its going down now. Read techsideline forums and you will see how their fans think they desperately need a new coach. Beamer took Tech to the national limelight beginning in the 90s though to say Tech was a dry straw prior is simply inaccurate.

Tech made their first major strides starting in the early 60s. They had Jerry Claiborne as coach and had become an independent (left the Southern Conference) - West Virginia followed in the early 70s.

Under Claiborne, Tech went to the Liberty Bowl in both 1966 (losing to Miami Fl, 14 - 7) and again in 1968 (losing to Ole Miss, 34 - 17 after leading 17-0). The Liberty Bowl was a much more prominent bowl at that time, there were only about 10 in operation then. Their 1967 team started 7-0 and was ranked in the top 20, dropping their final three games in close fashion, the real kicker for Tech fans was losing to VMI in their last game. Tech also had two huge profile games against Alabama in this period, lost both very close. Their schedule then was a combo of VA teams (UVA, W&M, UR and VMI) along with West Virginia, Kentucky, Florida State, South Carolina and Miami FL.

Tech had also completed Lane Stadium with 35,000 seats, again at that time a large stadium and they filled it most of the time.

Tech struggled in the 70s other than a Peach Bowl win over Miami FL. The program started to gain momentum back when they hired Bill Dooley away from UNC. He had a winning reign there for about 10 years before Beamer, took Tech to several more Bowl games and the stadium was enlarged to 50,000.

So, it's not fair to say a win against Tech was no accomplishment. It certainly was beginning in the 60s.

Other than a 3 year stint in Ft. Myers. FL during the 80's I have lived either in Huntington or the Kanawha Valley my whole life. Graduated Charleston High School in '77. Lived in Cross Lanes the last 22 years.
Cool story about Louisiana! For me, losing UCF & ECU while be a drag for a while. If UAB & USM go West like I think they will; we really have little to no history with the Eastern schools. I do think things can pick-up quickly though. As long as Marshall's growth continues I'll be happy. It is nice to see all the recent construction.

Va.Tech lost a close one at Memphis State in '77. Dr. David Lamie was their QB.

I didn't really care about Memphis, Tulane, Houston or SMU leaving as we didn't have much history or many significant games with any of them. But losing ucf really irked me - that rivalry has been fun; and then losing ECU seriously pissed me off, considering our two schools' ties.

After the rage and frustration subsided, it really all came down to one question - is anything really worth me giving up supporting Marshall sports? No, not really, and especially not some conference shuffling. Bottom line for us is that there are more teams in this iteration of the conference that provide much more opportunity for regional rivalries and regional fan travel. I don't live near Huntington anymore so all I can really ask for in new teams is either quality programs or opportunities for our fan base to really care about that program (i.e. rivalries) and I think Marshall comes out of this ok.

When it's all said and done, there's no way to know if this conference's current lineup will be as successful as the previous one, but there's no reason to think it can't be. BRING ON FOOTBALL SEASON!

Just for the record I want MU posters know I have nothing but love and support for Marshall University and its true Marshall fans........not the wantabees with a MU t-shirt and hat with no real roots to school. I know ECU has those too. Go Herds:)

I would hardly place the value of a fan on whether or not he has "real roots" to the school. I never stepped foot in a Southern Miss classroom, but I've been a Eagle Club supporter for over 15 years and haven't missed a home football game in 20 years. I know others like me, some of which never attended any university, which btw didn't prevent them from being more successful than me if you are one who measures success in dollars and possessions.

Put it this way, if 1 of every 25 USM grads would support the program in similar fashion, we would not be in the shape we are today.

Thanks for your support. One of the best supporters of SOUTHERN MISS I know has no ties to USM. He graduated from an sec school - one that has national championships, a giant stadium and fans from all corners of the globe.....yet he chooses to support SOUTHERN MISS. He drives 2.5 hours for home games and attends a couple of away games as well. Having a direct association to the school has nothing to do with whether or not you are a good fan.

In terms of the two major sports, WKU and MTSU are far better than Tulane and SMU and about equal to Houston to Tulsa. Every new football addition (even the ones who don't exist yet) is better than Memphis. I hate UCF but will miss the rivalry. ECU will be truly missed.

(1) By what objective measure could you possibly come to that conclusion.

(2) Never mind #1. Clearly, you aren't interested in any form of objectivity regardless.
