Delany: B1G spoke to several schools about joining B1G
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...-expansion

Quote:Commissioner Jim Delany told CBSSports.com that his league entered confidentiality agreements with possibly six or more schools to protect conversations about conference membership.

Recent additions Nebraska, Rutgers and Maryland took up three of those spots. Those schools signed documents preventing them from publicly discussing their relationship with the Big Ten.

When asked about an exact number of schools involved, Delany said it was more or less than six. Whatever the number, the point was made: the Big Ten was aggressive about expansion.

The discussions were more serious than exploratory, said Delany, who declined to disclose the names of the other schools.

He said that three of the "six or more" were Nebraska, Maryland, and Rutgers.

Because it goes back to the time when Nebraska was added, Missouri and Texas are also possibilities.

Nearly all of the possibilities are public universities ... sports media types should send out a few Freedom of Information Act requests in the near future, asking for copies of any agreements with the Big Ten or any of its representatives.

It not that hard...Georgia Tech is another one that it was almost a open secret a school he wanted badly.

If it dates back to Nebraska then schools like Pitt and Syracuse come into the picture.

"More or less than six" isn't very specific.

If 6, UNL, RU, MD, Missouri, Virginia, Georgia Tech.

After ND agreed and then couldn't get approval about 15 years ago they openly talked about Missouri, Kansas and Rutgers. But I don't think Kansas made the cut this time.

Yeah that was a sad day when the Hoos announced they were heading to the Big Ten. They will be missed.

If this is for real and the six number is on target instead of a number much higher than no wonder the Big Ten didn't expand. They were looking at 16 and nothing beyond it. Two more for sixteen and one other one as an alternate.

Shame on you Big Ten for being your usual traditional selves. Shot yourselves right in the foot on this one.

Realistically 16 is about as much as any conference could stand. Anything over is not a conference, but a marketing group.
It would be nice to get back to the 9-11 team conference.

I'm still in favor of inviting Mizzou and Kansas to get to 16.

I agree about a FoI move on those documents.

I don't think Missouri was one of the schools. They apparently went after the B1G, and not the other way around. Barry Alvarez said they had one applicant they ultimately turned down due to "academics." I don't think you even apply to the B1G if you won't get some sort of vote from the presidents.

I'm going to guess Notre Dame, Texas, and that secret rejected applicant that was suspected to be either FSU or UConn. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was the "heart" of the Big XII: Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

From less than a month ago (actually got the link from the comment section in the op):

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...oma-others

Quote:As a sidenote, two sources have told The World-Herald that the Big Ten has done prior “homework” on Oklahoma, Kansas and Vanderbilt among other schools who might some day be expansion targets. The Big 12 grant-of-rights deal didn't stop a look-see for OU and KU.

Well these were schools who got far enough along to sign confidentiality agreements. Maybe those are the "papers" that were sent off by UVA that the W. Virginia people claimed to know about from their B1G sources.

So basically, a triple (Nebraska), and two infield singles (Maryland and Rutgers).

It doesn't mean that B1G tried and failed with these schools (if there were any), just means that both parties agreed to enter some -- perhaps very basic -- level of discussions provided that it not play out in the press. That part of it worked well.
