Actually 15 or so miles west of DeKalb is the 134th market in Rockford. I think we actually get way more press there than we do from Chicago.

What he said. I'd be shocked if the MAC presidents invited Marshall back. Doesn't do anything for anyone.

I just posted the Official DMA's. Sorry to break it to you but NIU is officially part of the Chicago DMA.

Maybe someone else can post the DMA's for all of the branch campuses and such...wait a minute. 05-stirthepot

For MAC purposes, Ohio represents the league in both Columbus and Charleston markets in TV market discussions. From that standpoint Marshall is considered a duplication in Huntington/Charleston.

32. Columbus (930,460)-Medical Campus in Dublin
65. Charleston/Huntington (455,490)-Campus in Ironton
158. Wheeling/Steubenville (130,110)-Campus in St. Clairesville
193. Parkersburg (62,620)-30 minutes from Athens
203. Zanesville (32,940)-Campus in Zanesville

Total OH/WV DMA (1,611,620) #17 market

Ohio is definitely an important school for the MAC's TV package because of its regional reach and good FB/BB product.

I would agree with the geographic balance being better, but that's about it. The new C-USA is a shadow of its former self, and in football will now be on par with the MAC and Sunbelt, and maybe worse depending on how badly the new programs bring down the overall strength of the conference.

As for Marshall, they got the southern conference their fans wanted, and it would seem from reading posts on their board and the C-USA their fans are mostly OK with the watered-down C-USA conference since the new divisional set-up works for them and they have a lot of alums in Charlotte and Florida and so they are good with the FIU's, FAU's, and UNCC's joining up.

The thing about Marshall is that when they left the MAC, the theme was that: 1) more revenue in C-USA; 2) better traveling fans and interest would improve Marshall's football attendance; 3) at the time, much more bowl access; and 4) more southern oriented conference. Some of that came to fruition, although with Marshall's poor performance in footbal their avg home attendance (outside of when WVU came to play) is down I believe, plus the faraway C-USA fans did not travel with the possible exception of ECU. Marshall football has become irrelevant in terms of national perception and their other men's sports are among C-USA's worst most every year. With all that said, the past version of C-USA certainly did have more revenue and much better football attendance than the MAC. With all the new bowl opportunities available to conferences like the MAC, they really didn't end up getting much better bowl access, plus most years weren't good enough to be in a bowl.

I don't think the move to C-USA worked out all that well for Marshall, but I think most of their fans greatly prefer it over the MAC, even in it's new form. They'll never want to come back to the MAC, and I don't think the MAC would agree to invite them anyway.

CUSA members have two choices: 1) wring our hands over CUSA losing many of our top schools (ECU, Tulsa, UCF, Houston), or 2) approach the new CUSA with enthusiasm. Many of us will look at the potential positives: 1) tightened divisional geography, 2) schools with large growth potential (ODU, UTSA, NT, MTSU), 3) membership with 2 Florida schools and maintaining 4 Texas schools (recruiting). With some great play by some of our schools (and some good fortune) some in CUSA may surpass at least some AAC schools. Aside from Cincinnati, UConn, and maybe Navy; I do not believe we are that far from the AAC now. Tulsa also has a solid program.
CUSA has worked out well for us. One coaching hire did not.
Adding regional rivals should help our non- revue sports.
I enjoyed our association with the MAC a great deal and I have a lot of respect for the Conference. I believe the MAC's future is solid. You are correct, Marshall fans desire to be in a "southern" conference. I hope we can continue to play MAC schools on a regular basis (especially Ohio). Good luck Cincinnati and good luck MAC (except when you play CUSA.
