Rice vs. Lamar (Wednesday Game)
Here's our starting lineup against left-handed starting pitching...

Quote:Rice Owls‏@RiceOwlsdotcom23m
Rice lineup: Byrd CF, Stringer CF, Ratterree RF, Aquino DH, Hoelscher 3B, Cook LF, Perrott C, Stainback SS, Ewing 1B, Fox P. 6:30 pm start.

The only changes I would have made would have been switching Perrott and Cook, as well as Ewing and Stainback. I truly hope The OG knows what he's doing in starting Blake Fox tonight. No knock on Blake, who has been a major contributor this year, BUT... (1) Lamar has already seen him this year, and hit him hard, (2) Lamar has a right-handed laden lineup and (3) given he is our only left-handed pitcher and our second most reliable reliever, one could give a pretty strong argument that Blake is too valuable to this team as a reliever 2 - 3 times per week, than as a starter.

Having said that, I suspect we'll see 4 - 5 Rice pitchers tonight, for no other reason that to allow them to shake off the rust. I do hope we start using Lemond more than the once a week he's been used our past 2-3 weeks of action. Not only does he need the regular work to stay at his sharpest (he's been at his best this year when used 3 times weekly), but he's by far our most dominant and most reliable reliever. It's not like the past 2 - 3 years when The OG has had the luxury of 3 - 4 quality bullpen arms to choose from with confidence.

RE: Rice vs. Lamar (Wednesday Game)
I don't have four lineup changes to offer, nor do I have a different starter with which I would replace Fox. Heck, I don't even have concerns or worries about using Fox. With that said, I will return after the game to say I was wrong, should the lineup inhibit a win, and/or Fox creates a hole ultimately hanging an "L" on Rice. From where I sit, Rice plays a close game and wins. Why would 10 days off significantly change what we have seen for all of 2013? Recent history is betting on a Lamar "W". My memory says we have recently won in Beaumont and lost in Houston.

RE: Rice vs. Lamar (Wednesday Game)
Good first inning by Blake, who induced a fly out, followed by an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play after the leadoff hit.

Byrd ground out to SS.
Stringer singled up to middle.
Ratterree flied out to CF.
Aquino flied out to deep CF.

Scoreless heading to the top of the second inning.

RE: Rice vs. Lamar (Wednesday Game)
Blake puts the leadoff batter on again (BB), but stranded him there (fly out, two strikeoutsKK). Fortunately, Lamar doesn't believe in the sac bunt; at least not early in the game.

Hoelscher ground out to 3B.
Cook lined out to 3B. Tough luck for Keenan with his signature opposite field approach.
Perrott singled up the middle. Two outs.
Stainback ground out to SS.

Scoreless heading to the top of the third inning.

Good B3 for the Owls. Good, clutch hitting and really good base running.
We're up now, 3-0..going to T4

RE: Rice vs. Lamar (Wednesday Game)
1-2-3 inning for Blake (strikeoutKKK, fly out, ground out). Time for the offense to get something going.

Pitching change already for Lamar-- Fr RHP Brett Brown (6.50 ERA, 10 hits, 18 BBs, 25 Ks in 18.0 IP). Clearly a power pitcher who has not been hit hard, but quite wild...
Ewing leadoff walk! Well done. Now, let's execute.
Ewing advances to 2B on wild pitch. No need to sacrifice now.
Byrd successfully sac bunts. Runner on 3B, one out. I don't agree with bunting in that situation; especially with the meat of your lineup due up. Let's put the ball in play and at least get the one run in.
Stringer RBI double pulled down the RF line an off the wall! 02-13-banana
Ratterree singles to RF, but they hold Stringer at 3B. I hope that doesn't cost us. One out. Need to get a ball to drive in the air here.
Aquino sac fly. 02-13-banana Runner on 1B, two outs. I'd go for the steal attempt here...
And, on cue, Rat steals 2B for his 10th SB of the year.
Hoelscher RBI single! 02-13-banana
Cook ground out to 2B.
Nice aggressive hitting, coupled with near flawless execution and situational hitting. No complaint here.

Good guys take a 3-0 lead into the top of the fourth inning.

RE: Rice vs. Lamar (Wednesday Game)
Another 1-2-3 inning for Blake (2 fly balls, infield pop). Offense needs to keep at it. Killer instinct.

Perrott leadoff double into the gap. Let's keep it going. Situational hitting-- either sac bunt or hit to left side of field.
Pitcher 3 for Lamar-- JR RHP Jerrin Spikes (4.67 ERA, 17.1 IP, 17 hits, 3BBs, 17 Ks)...
Stainback flied out to CF. Poor AB not moving the runner.
Ewing grounds out to 2B, moving Perrott to 3B with two outs. That would have been a run had Ford executed.
Byrd grounded out to P.
Wasted opportunity with a leadoff double. Ford needs to spend as much time as necessary to learn how to bunt. He's been killing us all year with his inability to get one down.

Good guys lead 3-0 heading to the top of the fifth inning.

RE: Rice vs. Lamar (Wednesday Game)
I sense Blake is beginning to tire. Even last inning, he kept the ball up in the zone, but managed to get 3 fly outs. This inning, he got an out on a deep drive, and then a line single. I hope we have someone ready to go in the pen...and not wait until they've scored a couple runs.

Wow. 6-0 Rice. The last two runs coming with 2-out hits. Perrott and Stringer each have 3 hits already.

RE: Rice vs. Lamar (Wednesday Game)
Blake got out of the inning with a couple more outfield flies. Nice outing, but I'd take him out at this point for a number of reasons: (1) I do think he's showing signs of tiring with the ball conistently up in the zone, but more importantly, (2) we need him out of the bullpen for Saturday and Sunday. He's pitched enough to earn the win; time to turn it over to Simms, Lemond and company. Offense cannot go to sleep here as Lamar is a good offensive club.

Pitcher #4 for Lamar-- JUCO transfer RHP JT Autry (7.00 ERA, 9.0 IP, 10 BBs, 4 Ks)-- wild man #2. Patience, boys!

Stringer leadoff single up the middle. Christian is 3-3!
Ratterree grounds out to 3B on hit and run, but Stringer advances all the way to 3B with one out. Great baserunning there.
Aquino struck out. Geez...against a guy with just 3 Ks when you had to put the ball in play.
Hoelscher walked. Runners on the corners, two outs.
Hoelscher stole 2B. Not sure if that was a smart play with 2 outs and a runner on 3B.
Cook clutch 2-out RBI single! 02-13-banana Runners still on the corners, 2 outs.
Wild pitch scores Hoelscher! 02-13-banana Cook advances to 2B.
Perrott RBI double! 02-13-banana Geoff now 3-3 with 2 doubles.
Lamar pitcher #5-- So LHP Chase Angelle (3.60 ERA, 20.0 IP, 20 hits, 6 BBs, 7 Ks)...
Stainback flied out to CF.
Clutch hitting combined with aggressive baserunner. Well done.

Good guys lead 6-0 heading to the top of the sixth inning.

RE: Rice vs. Lamar (Wednesday Game)
Fox scoreless through 5. Lamar on their 5th pitcher already...and the 5th hurler induces the inning-ending flyball from Ford. 6-0 Owls going T6. Great job, Owls.

EDIT: And Simms now in. Nice job, Blake. 04-clap2

Going into the 6th inning. Owls up 6-0.
So far, the Finals break in the schedule doesn't look like it's hurt us a bit.
Very good all-round game being played by our team.

Excellent job, Big John. Gives up two hits, but limits the damage to one run. Inning over. 6-1 Rice.

RE: Rice vs. Lamar (Wednesday Game)
John Simms shaking the rust off gives up a one out double, followed by a two out single to kiss the shutout goodbye. Let's just keep the offensive pedal to the metal...

Ewing ground out to 2B.
Byrd single up the middle.
Stringer flied out to CF.
Ratterree ground out to 3B.

Good guys lead 6-1 heading to the top of the seventh inning.

Lamar's leadoff hitter/shortstop is a speedy dude named "Sam Bumpers." Pretty good name for a ballplayer methinks. Old school.
