San Diego State Game (bball)
San Diego State built a schedule to go with a possible Big West conference slate. But then the Aztecs were able to stay in the NCAA tournament-bid rich Mountain West. This means coach Steve Fisher felt he had to dial back his schedule a bit. Fisher has asked Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin to put off a road game in Cincinnati for a year. The problem is the Bearcats have to agree and will only do so if Cincinnati can find an appropriate alternative at home. UC can’t just give up a quality home game without finding a replacement. The Aztecs are already playing home games against Arizona and Washington. They go to Kansas and they have the rivalry game with San Diego. They are also in the Anaheim Classic with Big East favorites Marquette and Creighton as well as possible Pac-12 sleeper team in Arizona State. The MWC will have 18 conference games with the additions of Utah State and San Jose State.

Hopefully if the game is pushed back we can get another good home and home with a Power Conference school or a school like Gonzaga.

Butler, Dayton, St. Louis, or Marquette would work in my book. Not sure who is willing to go on the road to play Cincinnati but I hope something can be worked out. Any other schedule updates?

I guess we could move the xavier game to the Shoe if all else fails. It'll always be a sellout.

It's my understanding that if the schools make the mutual decision to move the game back to home courts, UC gets the first home game.

Yeah, but not until each team has an even number of games downtown.

Just a reminder to all, in addition to basketball game your discussing San Diego St owes UC a football game at the Nip. I attended the Game at San Diego St when UC put a whipping on the Aztecs. As Is I recall UC scored 50 on them at Qualcomm Stadium. So they owe us big time.

Kkeep the game with SD State...we need so many good games to make up for what we lose and the XU game being downtown. Besides that why would anyone at UC ever help the Fab 5
Coach after what they did to cheat UC in the Final Four?

I am not sure the status on the SDSU football game. It was pushed back to 2016 when SDSU switched their opener in 2012 to the University of Washington for a big payday. Then after that it was taken off the schedule when they were going to join the Big East. As of now it has not been rescheduled, and I honestly don't know if it ever will be.

I am not sure UC needs the San Diego State game next season. Moving the game back a season while adding another quality opponent actually would work out for the best.

Conference schedule next season includes four marquee games at home: UConn, Louisville, Memphis, and Temple. USF, UCF, Rutgers, Houston, and SMU fall into the category of solid home games that will depend on a few factors to determine crowd size. Remember with the mirror games there are likely eight high level rpi games conference games next season. New Mexico, Xavier, and NC State are on the schedule so adding another strong opponent plus a tournament would help out but you don't need to kill a young team.

The following year the need for SDSU increases because Louisville is off to the ACC and Tulane, Tulsa, and ECU join the conference. With 11 schools you will skip one on the road and another at home. The conference should be smart enough to let Cincinnati, Temple, UConn, and Memphis play a home and home but conference schedule still will be weaker.

I stated this opinion on another board, but if SDSU antes up for that football game (or reschedules it), then MAYBE we can consider moving the B-ball game. Until then, however, tough crap.

Agreed. Pushing back this game is dependant on UC finding an adequate replacement (so another home and home). Really will work out best for both parties. Also, any word on the Jimmy V Classic? Will UC be in it?

I hear UC is in the Jimmy V, but I don't know the opponent yet. But, since this came out at about the same time as the NC State/SDSU games, I don't think it is a replacement for either game.

If you want to sell season tickets you have to play a few good non conference home games.
You need NC State and SD St before the holidays otherwise it wil be the same as the last 7 years just wait and buy tickets for the marquee games in Jan and Feb.

RE: San Diego State Game (bball)
UC won’t give up SD St. home game without suitable replacement
04/30/13 at 3:12pm by Bill Koch

UC will not give up its non-conference home game against San Diego State, which is currently scheduled for next season, unless it can find another marquee opponent to replace it.

“We have a contract with them and we will be having some more dialogue there,” UC athletic director Whit Babcock said Tuesday. “If we can find a replacement that is a marquee opponent, I’m fine to do that, but we’ve got to make sure we’ve got some (quality) games at Fifth Third Arena from a non-conference standpoint.”

According to Andy Katz at ESPN.com, San Diego State has requested to have the game moved back a year after it elected to stay in the Mountain West instead of moving to the Big West, where a more difficult non-league schedule is more important.

For UC, it’s just the opposite. With the Bearcats no longer competing in the Big East Conference, they need all the quality non-league games they can get. In addition to San Diego State, UC will play North Carolina State at home next year and will play at New Mexico. The Bearcats will also play Xavier at U.S. Bank Arena and will play two games against rival Louisville in the American Athletic Conference, something they were never able to get in the Big East. The Cardinals will then move on to the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2014.
