And that's my point. How can a I-A team that avg only 9 thousand something per game provide a good payout?

I had wondered the same thing and recently read that the poorer drawing MAC teams will use some of their guarantee money from games w/ Michigan, Ohio St. etc to fund payouts to FCS teams to come to their stadiums. Otherwise, what you said would be true- there is no way that having crowds of 8k could finance any kind of reasonable guarantee money for an FCS team. Without spreading the wealth from their big money games, some of these MAC schools would be playing all their OOC games on the road.

Sounds like they spend money to get a home game. What a novel concept.

$300,000

Add on their game day costs and bottom line is Akron probably loses $ hosting JMU.

And how the heck does JMU get 300k out of Akron but only 5 years ago only 150k out of Duke?

RE: Akron
Is it possible MM had some input in this deal. Possibly thinking that if we were to ever have a chance to beat a 1-A, that Duke provided that opportunity.

By this thinking, he may have said, "hey Jeffrey, you keep giving me them thar Heels, the boys in maroon down 81 a couple ours, and drunk rednecks up there in the mountains of West VA to go play some tackle football against. Now Jeffrey, them boys keep spanking us. You know its best if we compete against the likes of CCSU, Morehead St., Alcorn, and that Francis school up there in PA. Now, I know ya got to make a dollar or two, and I keep seeing them ticks go down to Durham every year and get 'em a w. If ya got to make me play a big team, why can't we get them Blue Devils on the schedule."

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but I just noticed when looking at the Zip's football seating chart that they have an alcohol-free section, looked a little further and apparently they started beer sales throughout the stadium last season http://gozips.com/sports/fball/2012-13/r...0502idfusm . I guess they need to try to bring as much concession money in as possible.

I can't think of any other teams that do this off the top of my head (maybe some that play in pro-stadiums???). Last time I was at a college football game where alcohol was sold to general public (not club level) was years ago when Temple played at Lincoln Financial Field (they should not give people in that city alcohol IMO, it just adds to the problems).

EDIT: Apparently three other schools in Ohio sell: Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Kent State, hmmmm, I guess I don't get out to enough non-CAA college football games.

Think WVU does that too. Bridgeforth would have much more student support if beer sales could happen. And less students leaving at halftime!

West Virginia for the first time is selling beer at football games to everyone of legal drinking age — not just high rollers in luxury suites — "and we're expecting to profit around $1 million," athletic director Oliver Luck said in an interview.

I've always wondered this...opens up a lot of questions. I could see it happening only if beer sales at stadiums became the norm (looks like it might be heading that way).

In a related story, WVU admin has removed the struggling burger concession, claiming that it has lost money every year of its existence. It was determined that a lack of teeth of Mountaineer fans was the cause. It has been replaced with an applesauce and pudding concession. 02-13-banana

I'm all for it but I guess the fear is students who are of age buying beers for those who are underage. You could obviously do some type of bracelet thing but we can't seem to get students physically in the stadium as it is.

Some of our current fellow Dukes need to work on a) drinking less or b) holding down what they drink. Recently, I've had indirect & direct hurl events on or near campus. A chick hurled right in front of my pose at a beer fest downtown and I accidently rode my bike through hurl on graduation.

Beer at games, sure I'm for it but let's all wear purple plastic clothes. A hurl off the second deck could be dangerous.03-puke

Lol...dukes.

I still vividly remember walking down Port Road on graduation day; was headed to the stadium in full gown. My roommate & I sporting red solo cups of mimosa on the way to the stadium (cent, calm down). The Rockingham County sheriff deputy stopped traffic at the top of the hill just so we could walk across the street while obviously drinking. It was a really good cap to my undergrad time at JMU.

Who says JMU and town cops don't get along? I guess there is a time and place for everything.

Akron's the only football stadium I've been to that has an actual selection of beer to drink, and I've been to several of the college stadiums that sell it. The rest just sell you "beer" in a 12oz plastic up.

"In the FCS Huddle: FCS vs. FBS matchups

..............CAA FOOTBALL

The Matchups (10) - Delaware at Navy (Sept. 14); James Madison at Akron (Sept. 7); Maine at Massachusetts (Sept. 7) and Northwestern (Sept. 21); New Hampshire at Central Michigan (Sept. 7); Richmond at North Carolina State (Sept. 7); Stony Brook at Buffalo (Sept. 14); Towson at Connecticut (Aug. 29); Villanova at Boston College (Aug. 31); William & Mary at West Virginia (Aug. 31)

Dateline, Upset City? - James Madison at Akron (Sept. 7). Considering JMU defeated Virginia Tech in 2010, Akron might need to have LeBron James in the lineup against the Dukes.

Of Note - Connecticut and Massachusetts were two of the six original members of the CAA when it was known as the Yankee Conference ... Delaware is 15-11 all-time against FBS opponents, including 7-9 against Navy......."

Paul Myerberg, formerly of Pre-Snap Read and currently of USA Today Sports, does great breakdowns of every FBS team in a countdown from #125 - #1. He at least gives the Dukes a chance against Akron.

No. 120: Akron (MAC)
Quote:SEASON BREAKDOWN & PREDICTION

— In a nutshell
: The Zips have issues on offense and defense, not to mention a terribly difficult schedule, so it's difficult to envision a scenario where Akron leaps from one win to say, more than three. I feel secure in predicting one of those wins to come over UMass, unlike last season, and Akron should find a second victory against James Madison in September. The third is difficult to locate, however, especially given how Akron's MAC schedule breaks in October and November.

It doesn't seem fair, in a sense. The league's second-worst team – if not its worst team altogether – drawing the league's unquestioned top five teams in the span of eight games: Ohio, Bowling Green, Northern Illinois, Ball State and Toledo. Add in non-conference games against Michigan, Louisiana-Lafayette and UCF; there's eight losses. Akron has improved, but so has a team like Miami (Ohio) – and so has Massachusetts, for that matter. Victories, when they come, will be precious.

The offense is still finding its way despite last season's successful turn (all things considered). That the defense played well during the spring is a good sign, but it's also a sign of how far the offense needs to go before it can improve upon last season's production. In all, the Zips are not built to handle this season's schedule – in terms of personnel, player development and overall talent level. This rebuilding process will continue.

In the best case, Akron goes 1-3 in non-conference play and beats three teams in the MAC: Kent State, UMass and Miami (Ohio). In the worst case, Akron can't even handle James Madison early and fails to notch a victory all season. The most likely scenario stands somewhere in the middle, with the Zips having enough talent and coaching to top UMass but failing to mount a serious challenge against the majority of this schedule.

— Dream season: Akron goes 1-3 in non-conference play but turns it on in October and November, winning four games against MAC competition and coming close to bowl eligibility.

— Nightmare season: The Zips lose to James Madison and UMass. The Zips lose to everyone.

That's a pretty sad article for everyone. Basically, he said.... "Akron sucks, UMass sucks, JMU sucks, MAC sucks, the whole world sucks. I am going to hang myself now." Great article, definitely a Rust Belt outlook on life.

JMU REALLY needs to win that game. I know 99.999% of college football fans couldn't care less about it, but for JMU it's important.
