3 of my students were involved in a post Prom car accident
Tuesday we had a mother come in who lost her daughter to a similar accident. The girls best friend who was driving and charged with killing the girl talked to our students. I wish it would have taken. Lots of rumors but hopefully sammy will make it. Two of the students I was pretty close with. They are all seniors.

Teens injured in crash in Colon Updated: Monday, April 29 2013, 07:56 AM EDT COLON, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Grief counselors will be on hand Monday at colon schools as 5 people recover from a crash involving alcohol. It happened Saturday morning on Wattles road in Colon. Deputies say Samantha Carr (17), Jadalyn Riechart (18), Tanner Cook (18), Taylor Farmer (18) and Jesse Bowen (18) had just left a party when their car slammed into a tree. Carr suffered the most serious injuries but she was upgraded from critical to serious condition Monday morning at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. Newschannel 3 spoke with a woman who lives near the crash. "We've had a lot of drunk drivers run off the road there because of the curve," Clara Noirot says. "When I got up (Saturday) I heard moaning. I looked out my living room window and that's when I saw a car wrapped around a tree." Investigators say they did recover several opened and unopened alcohol containers in the car. They're not sure at this point which, if any, of the 5 students may have been drinking or which ones were wearing their seat belts. Deputies say charges may be pending depending on the outcome of the investigation.

So sorry, Coach - hope they all recover completely.

Also that authorities nail whoever provided the alcohol.

So they were leaving a party they went to AFTER Prom?

Ouch, so sorry for your kids, parents and the school community. This kind of thing is always a big fear for us parents. Prayers and thoughts for healing and recovery.

Hate it. So young. Hope they recover and learn a lesson.

Very hard on parents too, teachers, friends.

Yes at 4 a.m. Just wish the parents or whomever gave them the alcohol they would have had them stay. I hope they go after who supplied the alcohol. Pretty sure the driver who is a Mendon kid will be charged for drunk driving and more. As long as Sammy makes it he will not be looking at manslaughter. This town has had this same thing happen about 5 years ago but in that one the best friend died. He was a former player of mine. 5 suicides since I have been here. I can't get over that we just had this assembly and showed the same thing happen. If they are going to drink(not that it is ok) just don't get into a car. My mother was great when I was young. If I told her I needed to stay some place she didn't ask questions, that couldn't have been easy but it kept me from being behind the wheel.

Brings back some painful memories of my senior year at WMU, lost someone very close to me and it changed my life due to similar circumstances. We just don't learn as a society, or change. Like an invisible hand just keeps us moving along sometimes. Same region of the state too.

For some reason having Kimbo personalize them made this very real to me and just felt like a punch in the gut. So sad.

Saw that in the online Gazette, wondered if you knew them, small school and all. I've had a three students die during my career, one cousin who was 16, and a couple of my classmates who died during my time in school. You never forget those kind of deaths. God's way of setting us straight as to what is really important in life, and how we need to value our time here.

I agree. Never let my kids make a huge deal of it. No limo, no tux, no hotel room, etc.

Bought him a new suit that he could reuse in the future. Let him take our car rather than his beater. Neither of them complained. Suspect my daughter will when her time comes.

The funny thing was that a lot of the trailer trash had all the bells and whistles.

Smart man. The consumption aspect of prom is completely out of whack and probably has always been since when you and my dad were that age.

Bingo. Marketplace in Friday's edition also mentioned how much of the "lower classes" (I hate that phrase for this) overcompensated by overspending on prom. Case in point: A mom who got knocked up early and thus had to drop out of high school didn't get to attend her prom, so she's sparing no expense to make sure her daughter (who will also likely become knocked up by ~24) has the "prom experience" she never had. Which in translation is basically teaching people that sexual access can be used to extract money from others.

RE: 3 of my students were involved in a post Prom car accident
When my son was in High School (GR Catholic Central), we had begun hearing rumors of kids partying after football games, usually at a home with parents absent. Not wanting to sit back and wait for a funeral, my wife and I started organizing parents to communicate information about kid's whereabouts. We were all going to speak to each other after having our kids tell us where they would be after a game to confirm parents would be at home and that no alcohol would be in the home. One mother actually had the nerve to announce at our first parents meeting that she "would rather have them drink at her home so she would know they were safe".

Our son was given a very tough time from his buddies at school because his parents were "narcs", but they got over it and there were no funerals to attend. I would have regretted forever doing nothing and having one of these kids die as a result.

Taught in a Catholic school where all the parents thought their kids were saints. A number of very affluent parents who would routinely go away for weekends and leave their kids at home. Granted their kids were 17 and 18 but they trusted them way too much.

Kid has a party at his parents house, loads of booze. Tried to beat train across the tracks on Garden Ln. Driver killed, passenger killed, one girl with severe brain damage, never fully recovered.

Parents had a number of meetings at school regarding ease of getting booze. First off they were shocked their kids drank at all. Wanted to blame the school for not having enough alcohol education, wanted to blame anyone but themselves and the kids.

Best wishes to the kids, Kimbo. School can give all the warnings they want, and show videos of past accidents, but I think kids will always think its not going to happen to them. Too young to appreciate (or fear) mortality.
