RE: Draft and Undrafted Free Agents--Quick Comparison
Using the senior draft class as an imperfect proxy for talent available on a team, here is a cut at synthesizing the data

1. The big story, IMHO, remains that the losses to Marshall, Houston, and Memphis were really inexcusable. Marshall's two pros are receivers, but we yielded 334 yards rushing.

2. La Tech had a lot more talent than I had previously given them credit for, especially considering that one of the UDFA's is a QB

3.Ditto for UCLA. their QB was in his first game, but he had a lot of talent around him. IMHO,given that it was game 1 for coach and QB, vs. year 6 for our coach and year 3 for our QB, we should have competed for 4 quarters instead of just 1.

4. Best wins were probably SMU and @Kansas. Kansas was terrible in Ws and Ls but not without talent. EDIT: and Air Force, whose players are not immediately eligible for pro football.

5. The fact that Tulane almost beat us is very sobering. Probably the worst half of defense we played, but got a big play at the right time. The most generous, glass half full view would be we didn't have Callahan and we only had a couple of seniors on defense, and ran into a very hot QB with pro potential.

I think you can make an argument that our underclassmen were better than our seniors.

We have 4 pass catchers going to NFL camps, but Jordan Taylor was our leading receiver as a sophomore.

I'm a rank layman in talent evaluation, but Taylor, Gaines, Callahan and Boswell seem to me to be our best overall players, but I have no clue where they will rack out in NFL evaluations.

I didn't pay enough attention to how much contribution UH, La Tech, Kansas, Tulane and UTEP were getting from underclassmen. Likely that UTSA had few if any seniors contributing, given the embryonic state of their program.

Last thought--given how badly we were thumped by La Tech and UCLA amid a modest imbalance in projectable talent, discussions of beating TAMU strike me as especially romantic.

It we stay within 21 for the entire game, Bailiff will have sent a strong message to the doubters. If we win, we probably need to erect a second large statue in the Quad.
