I hate to see any transfers, but that one needed to happen for Yunio's sake. He was by far the worst of the freshman and just wasn't division 1 talent.

Respectfully disagree; you all haven't seen all I've seen. He is very rough around the edges, but the guy can shoot the ball, defend, rebound, and play with passion. I'd rather have kept him than Mario, to be honest. No, he was probably not ever going to be a 20-pt. guy, but we all would have said that about Hubbard, too, so who knows?
Maybe this is yet another case of bartow pushing him out the door if he thinks he's gonna get an extra commitment?

Nothing shocks me at this point now. It's more that it's indicative of the state of things under mubar. The freshmen, should they actually decide to show up, will be getting mucho PT. Have we entered an era in which we play mostly freshmen and sophomores most of the time, along with the jucos de jour?

Let's get this football team started so that we can then create a basketball program!

So we lost 2 of the 3 freshmen and only kept the other because his parents didn't want him to transfer to a JUCO. That is some strong recruiting right there.

Agreed. One year ago, Bartow was comparing Yunio to Mike Smith. With this sort of comparison, it seems as if Yunio was destined to fail. I felt the Mike Smith comparison was misguided, but believed that Yunio could've developed into a stronger, more athletic version of Ben Rhoda with time, patience, and COACHING. This coming season or the next, Yunio could've been an ideal 6th man.

I'm betting money that Bartow will go the juco route for Junior's replacement. Bartow will hype this juco up and tout his numbers, only to park him on the bench when the kid doesn't replicate his juco numbers.

RE: Yunio is transferring
I think that Bartow realizes at this point that not only his job, but his reputation is at stake. To this point his reputation in the coaching community has stayed far higher than it is on this board.

But neither reputation nor job is likely to survive another year like this one. Short term results, not long term development, are the order of the day. He'll do what he can to keep players that he thinks can provide quick results (Petey). And he'll happily jettison those that he thinks cannot (including assistants who have been loyal for years), in order to roll the dice on someone else who has not yet proved their limitations.

No disrespect to Yunio but he was not a DI player. There was a reason we got him from a NAIA. This is the best for us and hopefully we can get a shooting guard (Butler) and get a wing player (juco guy someone had from Brevard would be nice).

Yunio hates Johnson City according to his twitter page. If he doesn't want to be here, I don't want him here.

At best he would've been a scrappy, off the bench go into the stands after loose balls type player. He can go home. He's not going to win any games for ETSU in the long run.

This is exactly right. As I posted on another thread, his ego, selfishness, and bitterness are driving him now, whether he knows and admits it or not.
"Rolling the dice" is not a bad analogy. He may get lucky....................but if he doesn't, he's hurt even more students and fans, and ultimately, the university.
And yet he expects loyalty from the university and fans, when he shows not a whit to his own players nor coaches.

Spot on.

In addition, Bartow has failed miserably to engage the community and the fan base. Watching Dr. Noland's focused engaging is such a contrast from Bartow's desire to keep an "us v. them" stance, other than his country club friends. Granted, Dr. Noland's a President of a University, but shouldn't Bartow have a presence in this community? It's almost as if he feels entitled to fan support and unquestioned loyalty.

RE: Yunio is transferring
It's unbearable for me to read anything about ETSU basketball, because I know it'll contain the same spin, rationalization, and equivocation from Bartow. Note his formulaic remarks in the excerpt below (5/09/13 JC Press) about the number of transfers every year across the country in reference to Mario and Yunio transferrring.

The men’s basketball team produced two more one-and-done freshmen this year. Mario Stramaglia decided he was transferring soon after the season was over, and Yunio Barrueta is following his lead. The forward from Miami reportedly wants to get closer to home. “This is really going to work out great for him,” said ETSU coach Murry Bartow. “He’s going to play right there at home at Barry (University); the high school coach he’s very close to is now an assistant there. Honestly, he liked it here but was kind of a tweener as a player – not a true 3 and not a true 4. It really won’t matter as much at that level.” Barrueta was part of a Class 8A state championship team as a senior at Hialeah Gardens, and he signed a Division II scholarship before ETSU came calling. He didn’t have much impact as a freshman here, averaging 2.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in 25 games. Stramaglia, a guard from Birmingham, Ala., is also headed for a D2 school in the Sunshine State, West Florida.
Bartow says it’s not an ideal script when freshmen depart after just one season, but it’s not unusual either. If you read the paper every day and look around, there are about 500 kids transferring right now,” he said. “That’s just the nature of the our business. Guys make that decision, and it’s usually playing-time driven … Am I going to be in the rotation? Do I see light at the end of the tunnel? “I like both these guys a lot, but in the end it was their decision.” Bartow now has three scholarships to offer for next season. The early signing period just has a week remaining. “We’re very close on a couple of situations,” he said
