The offense, on the other hand, doesn't seem to be especially talent-laden, especially at the skill positions. When I saw Birdsong in person versus GA State last year, I didn't think he could play at this level. Hopefully, he's gotten a lot better or it could be a long year. What about depth behind Scott at tailback? It's largely unproven. Is there an established wide receiver (guy that tore up his knee, Daniel Brown, but no one else comes to mind) or tight end (not really)? Is there an established back-up at QB? Not really. I'd be curious to know the thoughts of others with regard to this offense. Seems like a huge question mark to me and not exactly promising. And of course, the biggest question mark is the philosophy of the new offensive coordinator. Given his pedigree, I'm not concerned about him, more so about the players asked to carry out his vision.

My biggest concern is the O-line. they seemed to get pushed around a bit last year, and for the first time in a long time we struggled at times converting on short yardage situations. I don't have the numbers in front of me to back up my statement, but I remember several situations last year where we didn't convert. Was the play calling predictable? Yes. But that was nothing new. was it the fact that the person toting the rock didn't have the extra strength and will to gut out the extra yard? Maybe. But I put it on the line. Hopefully they have gotten a little bigger, stronger, and nastier or Birdsong will not have much opportunity to show what he and the skill players can do.

Remember there is a new OL coach. Don't know how much difference/improvement Newsome will make

Yeah, the punter looked awful at the Spring game.

I thought he was our backup punter, but I could be wrong.

Yea, I think Starke, barring injury, is expected to punt this year.

I forgot to mention special teams:

Kicker
Starke has been the starter the last 2 years. From his roster bio:
-Became the first kicker in school history to hit a pair of last-second game-winning field goals in a single season, putting through game winners on the final play at Liberty and in the NCAA First Round at Eastern Kentucky.
-His 15 field goals in 2011 tied a school record for a single season.
-Is a career 15-for-19 on field goals with a long of 44."

Punter
Graduated 2011 2nd team All CAA/2012 3rd team All CAA David Skahn. Heard that Starke will be handling the punting duties. The punting at the Spring game was reportedly really bad. As others have stated that wasn't Starke but the backup punter (Sharples?).

Long Snapper
Graduated Beaver (6'2"/250), who was the starting LS for several years. His backup last season was listed in the last game notes as Derek Hart (6'4"/205) who will be a rSo. If Hart does end up doing the LS, hopefully having a smaller guy in there won't be an issue of having a NT lined up right across from him running him over every time he snaps the ball.

Holder: Quintin Hunter returns.

On a college campus, Beaver never graduates....

-Starter Leavander Jones was a senior.
-Sometimes corner/sometimes safety, sometimes starting Ryan Smith was a senior.
-2 deep Jeremiah Wilson has been moved to safety.

Starters:
rJr Corey Davis (5'9"/205)
??rFr Taylor Reynolds (6'1"/185)??

After the above 2:
-rSr Daniel Allen (5'10"/185) has seen 2 deep action over the last 3 seasons.
-rSr Ron Gordon (5'9"190) saw some 2 deep action.
-3 listed on roster who were true freshmen last season who will be rFr. One of those I have seen mentioned a couple of times is Xavier Crocker.
-1 HS signee listed at CB

Safety Starting WS Jakarie Jackson was a senior. Backup safety Isiah Wright was also a senior.

Starters
-At FS rJr Dean Marlowe (6'2"/195), 1st team All CAA last season, could be the 2nd All American on defense after Robertson.

At WS?
-rSr Peter Rose (5'10"/195) Started a game last season at WS when Jackson was injured.
-rJr Jeremiah Wilson (5'10'/195) has been moved from corner to safety.

After that:
-rSo Sean Walker (5'11"/190) was listed as Jackson's backup in the last game notes
-Wyatt Johnson- saw he had a 75 yd fumble return in the Spring game. He's at least the 3rd player I've seen mentioned this spring who isn't showing on the roster at jmusports.com.
-1 HS signee who is listed as a 6'1"/190 WR/DB.

Are 3 other WS listed on roster, but they have been moved to LB (Brooks), RB (Magruder) and WR (Woodyard). Position looks thin. My guess is at least one other, if they haven't already, gets moved here.

Well, you can remove Davis and Crocker. It sounds like it will be:
Taylor Reynolds- 1 starter

The 2nd starter and rest of the 2 deep will likely come from amongst:
-Jeremiah Wilson: does he get moved back to corner where he played last season?
-Daniel Allen
-Ron Gordon
-one of the 2 rFr corners remaining, #38 K Williams and #40 Julian Drakeford, Both listed at 5'10"/160.

RE: 2013 depth chart
Well, now JMU should have 2 more schollies available. Looks like could use a transfer in the secondary, at DE, and possibly at OL if Lane is going to be out for the season.

The punting at the spring game wasn't bad, it was horrible. I sincerely hope we had open tryouts at some point for the punter position.

I agree the punting in the Spring game was terrible. Let's hope the projected starter is back for the season opener, and that JMU doesn't suffer any injuries to the position, because the guys punting during the Spring game were clearly not ready.

RE: 2013 depth chart
At the WR position , Albert Williams may get some playing time. He has nice size at 6`4" ,220 pounds. He has steadily improved in practice and he seems to be really liked by his team mates. Playing time may be difficult to get with 17 WR `s on the roster. Maybe incoming true freshman , Raven Greene will get a shot at corner. His bio looks really good. I think John Barillo will get some playing time as a reserve LB. iF were me , I would give incoming FR Jordan Brown a look at QB. He looks to have some nice skills in his highlight video.
