Time to replace Chick-fil-A Bowl
Now that the Chick-fil-A Bowl has officially been added to the College Football Playoff lineup, the ACC needs to secure a new number 2 bowl.

Last year's Chick-fil-A bowl paid $4 million to the ACC and $3 million to the SEC. None of the ACC's lower bowls come close to this. Several are in the $2 million payout range and would have to dramatically improve in order to justify status as a number 2 bowl.

Better candidates would be the Outbak or Gator. Both of these had payouts per school of $3.5 million last year, the same total payout as the Chick-fil-A (4+3=3.5+3.5). The Outback has been pretty successful with its current B1G v SEC matchup. However, the Gator's TV ratings have dropped pretty substantially since they switched from their former ACC tie in to a lower level B1G-SEC matchup. Seems like a natural fit for the ACC to pair up again with the Gator. With the College Football Playoff occupying all day New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, a move to one of the former BCS time slots (January 2, 3, 4) could improve the Gator's TV revenue substantially as well.

Why replace it? If there are 6 CFP Bowls and 5 Power Conferences, why wouldn't we keep it as our #2 home. I'm sure they'd rather have the ACC #2/3 than the AAC/MWC/MAC/CUSA/SBelt #1.

Gator is probably the most likely. The Big Ten is probably pulling out and there's a pre-existing relationship.

It's an "access bowl" now. There can not be any automatic bids to an access bowl. The only three that can have auto bids are the Rose, Sugar (Champions), and Orange.

I think you are more likely to see a group of bowls become #2, with multiple conferences filling those slots.

Both the conferences and the bowls are beginning to realize that matchups get stale with the current setup. I think you'll likely see some combination of the Power 5 set up alliances with major bowls to make the matchups less predictable.

How much does it stink to be in the g5? I feel like they are frozen out now more than ever.

They have to wait and see what scraps are left for bowl games. I kinda like the Beef O'Brady Bowl for our 6-6 teams...great location, so-so bowl.

It's becoming an Access Bowl and will no longer be an ACC tie-in.

That would be perfect. I'd rather our #2 play an SEC school and the Gator is probably the highest paying bowl left out of the CFP. It's probably the best we can do.

The Chick-fil-a Peach may regret losing their ACC/SEC tie in. That bowl has never not sold out in almost 20 years of having that Tie In. Now they may have to deal with some other conference schools that may not sell out going to Atlanta.

Ideally, Atlanta would launch a second bowl. One for the CFP and another one that the ACC/SEC could take advantage. But that's just wishful thinking as it has never been mentioned as a possibility by a connected source.
