ACC approves Grant of Rights
Pretty big move by the ACC, and it reduces the likelihood of ACC schools going to the B10.

For JMU, this likely limits movement in the ACC/AAC/CUSA and the corresponding trickle down effect, unless B10 goes after UConn/Cincy.

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is the Grant of Rights?

RE: ACC approves Grant of Rights
The member institutions agree to grant the league their television rights for the duration of the current ESPN contract, through 2026/2027. If they leave they don't take their television rights with them; as I understand it, their games can't be broadcast, making them unattractive candidates for membership.

Basically members in the league give collective media rights to the league itself. Then they receive their share through a payment from the league. This then means that the league that they signed with (current league) retains these rights through some contract period, whether the institution leaves that leage or not. It seems to remove the financial gain incentive from changing leagues. I believe there have been about 3 leagues that have placed these agreements in place.

Hope that helps. If I missed anything, I'm sure someone will correct this.

Was this what the Big XII did? They started it, right?

RE: ACC approves Grant of Rights
So with the apparent settling of the power conference moves, unless the Big 10 or ACC grab UConn or Cincy from the AAC, would this appear to be the beginning of the end of this major round of conference realignment? Could this end it for the next decade at minimum? Is this summer JMU's last chance at moving up?
I hope these are all questions that our study is already answering.

Yes, outside of AAC members going to the Big 10, the "big boy" realignment will slow/stop on the East Coast.

I know I shouldn't disrespect their knowledge in this, but does the admin know the implications of this move by the ACC? I feel like people on this board understand the big picture better.

But wait, someone promised me UNC, UVA, and Ga Tech were leaving for the Big Ten as soon as the Maryland lawsuit was over. LOL

I think the implications of this, and the Big Ten's move to increase the number of conference games each school plays, are potentially very big for FCS schools. This certainly does seem to indicate that conference realignment will slow to a halt, and as a result, the opportunities to transition to FBS are going to vanish. With fewer payday games, FCS programs who depend on them to balance their athletics budgets are going to find it hard to maintain spending.

Who needs a moratorium from the NCAA when the TV rights deals will do the same thing?

This essentially takes a lot of UMass' "what ifs" off the table and, in my opinion, increases the chances that they join the MAC as a full member. That in turn, will likely lead to the MAC adding, or at least more seriously considering, adding #14. This, I believe, would be good for JMU.

Good to see the ACC taking steps to solidify itself. Going to be great basketball. Hopefully JMU moves to FBS soon.

That would be awesome for JMU if the MAC took us. How does this affect Maryland? I'm still not sure if I'm completely understanding this despite others' attempts to explain. I figured they'd just be under the Big 10 contract.

I don't think this affects Maryland since they've already decided to leave the ACC. They are fighting that $50 million exit fee, though.

I'm actually glad to see the ACC do this. This conference movement stuff has gotten way out of hand. I still want JMU to move but that's different than talking about schools like UNC and UVA moving. Enough, already.

Sure. I'm sure they would require any joining institution to grant their rights as well. So Notre Dame won't be going to the ACC in football time anytime soon. Of course they just re-upped their deal with NBC anyway.
