The debate on Strasburg last year is one of those awesome/unknowable/"only in baseball" deals -- everyone is right! I also lean towards some of the thoughts on handling him differently re: Medlen, etc., instead of shutting him down when they did ... but for better or worse they are really building for the long haul. (This city went into an unbelievable funk when Stras blew out his arm two Augusts previous.) Regardless, that team wasn't winning it all last year with Storen and Clippard at the back end of the 'pen, regardless. Both are headcases.
I will disagree big time on Morse's defense. Morse is a good guy in the clubhouse and a bomber when healthy but his defense is crap, and LaRoche is legitimately a gold glove caliber glove at first -- he digs throws better than anyone, and started a web-gem-esque 3-2-3 double play a few days back. Now, LaRoche has been completely lost at the plate the last five or six games (0-for-his-last-12 or something with like 9 Ks), but he was smoking the ball all over the park early, but just right at people. But that will eventually even out (he'll bat prob .275 with good power at the end of it), and they need his glove to fish Zim's throws.
As for Anthony, he has been off-and-on in adjusting to the bigs. His first charged error should not have been charged to him; the umps in at least two games expanded the zone on him high and made him swing at pitches he wouldn't otherwise. I was hoping he'd start off better stat-wise just for him and his family's sake, but he'll be fine -- those wrists and eye are still there.
Agree wrt Davey. He's a good guy, fun to watch and listen to. I think the Nats will be fine -- their slash line offensively last April was actually worse in batting average and slugging, but they had unbelievable starting pitching early to compensate. They were 14-7 versus 10-11 -- 3 games difference. Davey's even keel demeanor will work best in that clubhouse.

As for the other comments about DC, well ... it's super expensive but actually a very fun place to live and a nice, reborn city downtown these days. I know you were referring to politics, and I'll agree with you on that. The best government that money can buy certainly doesn't attract the best and brightest, or at least those in it for the right reasons. But most of the locals are just normal government and military workers, not the politicos and political hanger-ons (lobbyists, commentators) everybody detests.

I don't think we disagree on Morse. Not sure where you thought I was commenting on his defense. My thought about the trade is that they need bats more than they need young pitching prospects. Just don't think they got enough value back. What they need is a center fielder. Maybe they got one, maybe they didn't. Morse belongs in the DH league. You certainly can't have him at first and Zim at third every day, or you'll end up with Butch Hobson numbers. I just don't think LaRoche will hit enough. He has some years but not others, and what you see is what you get. I think the plan is Zim to first when Rendon is ready, and that's why they didn't want to give LaRoche the third year.

I agree that Washington is a fun city. Capital cities usually are. Capital cities always have a bunch of underworked and overpaid bureaucrats with time and money on their hands, and that means lots of support for arts and entertainment. Agree totally with your best government money can buy comment, particularly the part about being there for the wrong reasons. Only difference is that even more than politicians and lobbyists and talking heads, I'd apply that to the legion of nameless and faceless and totally unaccountable bureaucrats and consultants and contractors with whom the system is stuffed to overflowing. They are disproportionately bad people who contribute little or nothing of value, sponge off the rest of us, and live very well doing so, and that irritates me to no end. I can never understand why so many are so quick to attack greed in the private sector but look the other way regarding greed in the public sector, where my experience has been that it is far worse. Particularly when so much of the greed is for power that is intended to be used to screw the rest of us.

Yes, the arts are really good with the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian museums. There is the National Gallery and several other art museums. D.C. has the Folger Shakesphere Library.
Baltimore is only 38 miles away with frequent trains so it is possible to see both the Nats and Orioles.
