UC trustees demand Chesley resign by 5 p.m. today
Quote:Seven of Stan Chesley’s fellow University of Cincinnati trustees have demanded that he resign by 5 p.m. today.

A letter sent to the disbarred lawyer late Friday said if the board did not get the resignation by today, “it is our intention to hold a special public meeting to consider a formal resolution regarding your continued service on the board.”
One member, Ginger Warner, refused to sign, arguing that the board should have met personally with Chesley before sending the letter.
It appears trustees, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and the Ohio Board of Regents don’t have authority to force Chesley off the board.
State ethics rules, for example, apply only to actions he took while on the board.
Chesley, 76, was disbarred March 21 by the Kentucky Supreme Court for unethical actions in connection with a $200 million settlement for people sickened by the diet drug fen-phen, and likely will lose his law license in Ohio.
The letter cites UC’s code of conduct, which said board members “are responsible for maintaining the highest ethical standards of this institution and of the broader community in which we function.”
“While we acknowledge your service to the university, such service cannot overcome the serious breach of your ethical obligations,” the seven trustees wrote.
Chesley was appointed to the board in 2009 by then-Gov. Ted Strickland and his term runs until 2018. He also served on the board from 1985 to 1994.
Board Chairman Fran Barrett was not available for comment Monday morning.

This is supposedly also the guy who was micromanaging Williams. Along with the disbarment, I cannot think of a real good reason this guy should still be around. Even Phil and his drunken driving exploits pales in comparison.

Was wondering when someone, The BOTs, UC Leadership would suggest that Chesley resign.

Another example of how public education in Ohio as well as the rest of the U.S. is fundamentally broken.

The governor should be able to pop Chesley in a heartbeat.

I can't say that I agree with this. Such an ability would make the board highly susceptible to political influence. We don't yet know that peer pressure isn't enough. If he simply refuses then perhaps there's a breakdown in the system. It's far too early to cast judgement.

He might as well resign, he's got bigger problems right now than fighting to stay in a position where nobody wants him.

I've run across him a few times. Reminds of that character in Road House who thinks he owns the world and people should jump when he speaks. Good riddance to him.

Glad Phil Cox and Wyler are already gone.

Trustee appointments are already political. The path to trusteeship is paved with campaign contributions and well placed articles about the governor. But, we can't get rid of someone who is a criminal because it might introduce politics?????

While this is true to a degree, I'd like to present an alternative vision as one of my friends is a sitting member. No large contributions, b/c he didn't have the means to. No well placed articles. Etc.

It's undoubtedly a 'who you know' scenario, however it's very possible this can happen w/o the crap.

Cliff Peale ‏@cliffpeale 17h

Disbarred lawyer Stan Chesley does not resign from #UC board. Trustees will meet Thursday 9am to tighten the screws a bit. @Cincienquirer

To say this guy is an egotistical pos is an understatement. Personal experience. A power play somewhere he's not wanted is right up his alley. The sad part of all of this is that what is best for the University is the least of his concerns. It's all about him.
I wasn't aware that he was actually disbarred in Ky. I knew the possibility was there and that it was probably going to happen, but to see it in writing brings a smile to my face. Professional disgrace is exactly what he deserves.
Tighten the screws, BOT!

If or when this guy goes, we better hope that UC has no skeletons in the closet because if he is anything like people say he is you can bet he'll bring them out.

Have at it. He would look a 1,000 times worse than he looks now.
No idea what skeletons UC could have. **** him.

Well put and couldn't agree more.
Here's a question for the lawyer types out there...
I would think that what he did to cause the disbarrment in Kentucky would be criminal. How is it that he's not going through a criminal trial? Is the disbarrment part of plea?
Also, the original article says that he'll likely loose his law license in Ohio as well. Is that the same thing as being disbarred?

This has probably been answered in the papers down there so I apologize in advance.

Not sure about the criminality question, but there was mention in an article that typically state bar associations have an agreement that if a lawyer is disbarred in one state, other states honor it as well. It is looking like he is going to fight that agreement in Ohio, although Indiana and Michigan appear to be abiding by it as well.

I'm an idiot when it comes to the law, but I thought the whole Phen-Phen thing was a class action civil matter. Sound like what he did was a breach of ethics, not criminal.

Thanks for the clarifications.
The article does state that he was disbarred for unethical practices so maybe it wasn't criminal. The only reason I thought so was because he personally gained monetarily from these unethical practices.
Still, I call shenanigans. :D

Mayor Mark Mallory is backing Stan, and saying he should not resign. What an idiot.
