The dawning of a new era in the Northeast Memphis area
I was driving back to East Memphis after visiting family out in Bartlett and was shocked to see that a longtime area fixture has changed its name.

Tammy's Adult Bookstore at 5937 Summer Avenue (next to another longtime area fixture...Leno's Liquors) has changed its name.

It is now know as Romantix Adult Bookstore. I wonder if the other Tammy's around town also changed their name? I think there are two or three around town.

Well when Fantasy Warehouse closed to expand the Gold Club, Tammy's had to do something to appeal to their influx of perverts!

I have a feeling that the guys that work at Leno's aren't very Italian.

Thank goodness! Now that place can finally get the credit it deserves for the good job it does. Tammy was so sleazy, but Romantix is such a better name to describe it.

I miss the Christal's jingle on the radio.

That had to be the craziest song to actually store experience in the history of advertising.

This always confused me. It seems like the sign said "Tammy's #4". So I used to think there must be four of them around. But I think they all said that.

Are you serious? I always found that store to be so uplifting.

And 3601, I know we all say we are visiting family in Bartlett when we head out that way, but it's really okay.

Is that the one on the corner of Summer right under 240?

Never been there.

I wouldn't be surprised if that store was able to, ahem, lift you up...

But the ads seemed so classy and sexy, but Christal's was as smutty as Fantasy Warehouse.

Sirus has some "adult" toy commercials on their comedy channels and they bleep out the "adult" terms.

That's the Gold Club. I tried to go once when I had no power after Hurricane Elvis but I was already lit and made a smartass comment to the girl taking cover fees in the lobby. A bouncer appeared out of nowhere and quickly convinced me that it would be in my best interest to leave. The bookstore is a couple miles north on Summer.

The Gold Club took over the old Fantasy Warehouse space about three or four years ago.

That Fantasy Warehouse gave me a couple crazy experiences.

There was a time where I was there with a girl when I was 18 and saw a guy older than me that I know from my old neighborhood. There is a certain awkwardness from running into someone you know in a sleazy place like that. The girl got me to buy edible body paint and lotion that heated when you rubbed it. Imagine my fun when we got back to her place and she would only let me put the edible body paint on her hand and the heating lotion on her arm. And being the naive 18 year old I was, I let her have the stuff. Someone else probably got to have fun with her and that stuff.

Another time years later, I was in there when I saw a gay magazine based in Memphis sitting on the front counter and one of my then co-workers was in a spread on the cover. I had just recently found it he was gay (I think you'd never know it if he didn't tell you) so I wasn't shocked, but I was surprised. But needless to say, it was really weird seeing that.

I've been in the Gold Club once or twice since they renovated. It still looks as crappy as before and to be honest, it'd probably be better if there was a smaller Gold Club and a place there where I can get a girl a bullet!
